2019: “GPT2 is groundbreaking in two ways. One is its size, says Dario Amodei, OpenAI’s research director. The models “were 12 times bigger, and the dataset was 15 times bigger and much broader” than the previous state-of-the-art AI model”

This is insanity.

It appears the entire Seanad voter register has been junked without letting any of the voters know and we all (TCD and NUI) have to re-register on this 1996-flavoured website to use our vote.

Was not expecting the McGahern memoir to open with football, or to reveal that John’s first date with Madeleine was United V West Ham at Upton Park in 1967. United won 3-1, and Nobby Stiles, George Best and Bobby Charlton all played that day.
Two John McGahern arrivals today:
Frank Shovlin's landmark biography (out October 8th)
Amongst Women (foreword by me, out now). The other reissues are That They May Face the Rising Sun (Kevin Barry), Memoir (Yiyun Li) and The Dark (Colin Walsh) @faberbooks.bsky.social www.faber.co.uk/product/9780...

Irish folk, if you don't like the Irish government spending public money on fossil fuels, here's your chance to have your voice heard.

A public consultation is open until Friday 4 September and all you have to do is copy/paste the response at the below link into an email and press end.
Ireland's electricity capacity mechanism funds fossil fuel infrastructure, works against climate action and in favour of large energy users such as data centres. It is coming up for its 10-year renewal, so this is a key moment to intervene

"maybe Scrooge was right" Scrooge wasn't real! He was invented specifically for the purpose of being wrong!
"Maybe Scrooge was right-" he was not. He was a miserly asshole facing the same demise as his former business partners if he didn't make some serious changes with how he treats the people around him. That's the point.

This shit is so dumb. No kidding, a helmet isn't going to help you if a car nails you at high speeds.

But what if you go down at 10-15 mph because of another cyclist or pedestrian being a moron, or hitting something you didn't see? It's regularly the difference between Hospital and No Hospital.

Oh no. Exactly what everyone who knows literally *anything* about it said would happen did in fact happen. Wow.

So now all the other know nothings in other governments around the world who are planning on giving away everyone's privacy will stop and think for a single second, right?

Right??
Australia’s eSafety commissioner buried a report (released Friday afternoon) that shows the under 16 social media ban didn’t tangibly reduce teen social media use, and also resulted in parents tuning out of kids usage.

We traded our privacy for no reason.

Trans athletes in sports and voter fraud fall into the same stupid category: Both happen rarely, have little effect on most people's lives, and take up a huge amount of wasted discussion that should be focused on affordable groceries, housing, and healthcare.
