Definitions of orientalism vary, of course, but I would have said it just old fashioned Islamophobia as much than orientalism: the implication is that any one who says “Inshallah” is explicitly invoking God and so all Muslims are all religious extremists intent on destroying “the west”/white people.

Exactly this. The philosophy of "Use what works" means that white supremacists will use positions and stances thought to be leftist to try and lure people and exploit divisions. When the professor talks it's always good to listen and learn

One of my favorite reads this year. Well worth the time to sit with it even if you feel you are knowledgeable about the subject. "We have never learned enough, we never have all the answers, we have never seen all the cool things we can see, and we can never let our guard down."

The problem with Portland politics is that people treat "politeness" as neutral or even positive, meanwhile I have met some of the most hostile polite people in City Hall. They do a great job speaking in code and hiding behind a smile while systematically pushing policies that actually hurt people.
