Universities buying into this shit under the guise of "equity" makes me SO angry
Equity for my students would be access to the databases and journals we've dropped subscriptions for. It'd be having a paid human to caption videos and make PDFs screen-reader compatible. Not this shit.

My employer, Univ. Colorado will pay OpenAI $2M/year under the banner of “equity”. That’s 54 full scholarships / year. Plus, our IT will be able to read our chatGPT logs, and our chats can be requested under public records law. No thanks. Surveillance is not equity

The older I get, the more my politics mature from childish, naïve beliefs like "the world is complicated and leaders have to make hard decisions" to more serious, adult principles like "hurting people is bad and helping people is good."

i have said this before but when “getting rid of race in admissions” for the administration means “you can’t even try to reach out to underrepresented communities and encourage them to apply and if you do it is illegal discrimination against white people” then the actual goal here is segregation
Harvard Ends Undergraduate Minority Recruitment Program as Trump Targets Race in Admissions | News | The Harvard Crimson
By ending the minority recruitment program in May, Harvard shuttered a more than 50-year-old initiative to encourage minority high school students to apply.

NOT THE MOST POLICED
Baltimore is currently experiencing its lowest homicide rate in 50 years, and it’s not because they iNVeStEd iN pOLiCe, it’s because they invested in community programs to facilitate conflict resolution, address mental health, address poverty, and give kids fun and meaningful things to do
Baltimore literally halved its murder rate recently.

Be kind to yourself and hard on the system is exactly the vibe I'm carrying into the rest of this year
Burnout is clinically understood as a combo of 6 factors—work overload, lack of control, insufficient rewards, breakdown in community, absence of fairness, & value conflicts—and only a fraction of it is under your control. Burnout is a systemic problem, so be kind to yourself and hard on the system.
Hey gang I've had to learn recently that the whole "burning out" thing is real so if you find yourself being panicked every waking second that you're not working on something, despite those seconds being very rare, you should maybe listen to the signals and take an intentional break before you crash

I'll never understand "F*ck you, I got mine". What's the point of achieving glorious heights if you can't share that experience with others? It's just an empty existence. No point to it.
"I got mine, now let's get you yours" will always be the more fulfilling option.

Happy Pride month, all! Way back in 2018 I made these galaxy pride flags. They were shared many thousands of times, featured on Vice, and even made their way onto book covers and into video games.
Here are the original ones I created (in no particular order!) so Bluesky can have them too. 💙
