“Illegally detaining and brutalizing a racial minority until they agree to flee the country” isn’t immigration enforcement, it’s ethnic cleansing. There’s no legal standard here - these people meet the standard! What differentiates them is not their legal status but their race and color.
Many stories of illegal detention (while still in active TPS status) and just brutal treatment in detention. People so brutalized that they ask to be deported— one man asked every week — but remained detained for 6 additional weeks! He could have been put on several previously deportation flights!

They’re live-streaming the execution of the person they think they can get away with doing that to first. It’s a test. If they can do that, they’ll expand the margins of permission.

Really was one of the dumbest and most harmful things possible for “virtue signaling” to become some kind of epithet. Sending externally visible signals that you are engaging in pro-social behavior is normal, natural, and good, it’s how society works. Other people can’t read your fucking mind.

"why would I ever need a task to be done faster" come on, guys. Because we're dying. Because we are literally all dying all the time. Because we're running out of time. The fact that it's often hard to measure or stupidly measured doesn't mean "saving time" isn't an important thing to human beings

I am so beyond fucking tired of the insane levels of deference and plausible deniability news media orgs--esp legacy ones like the NYT--afford Trump and the absolute intellectual rot and cravenness that it represents among the ownership & leadership of those orgs

I'm just gonna bookmark this for future reference when Dem pundits complain about how the party has trouble communicating its message to voters.

The reason you keep running into trouble with your branding isn't campus radicals. The reason is that your opponents purchased all the media outlets.

You do not have to be a parent to feel anger at the details in the latest investigation by @isabelaalhadeff.bsky.social and @samanthamichaels.bsky.social.

But the white-hot rage I felt as a dad reading this is going to stick with me for some time.

feels like at least part of what is happening is that a lot of people want politics to solve the "my life feels empty" problem and the populist right is directly appealing to them

I'm not naive enough to actually believe this will happen, but Democrats could be preparing, right now, lists of impeachment charges against (at a bare minimum) Hegseth, Kennedy, Mullin, Patel, Blanche, & Trump, as well as Bondi, Bovino, & Noem (still worth doing!) that rely purely on public facts,

I really wasn’t trying to start a fight with Prof. Bender but now that she has created a long thread subtweeting me and her disciples are all yelling at me, let me just say that this is the crux right here. She seems to respond as though I am describing something a priori impossible.

But they're not cementing shit. That's the problem. They're deluded about what they're actually accomplishing here.

The more crazed and lawless shit they do, the weaker their precedents. At this point, much of their jurisprudence has no more staying power than "Lake America".
I think they’re willing to take more drastic measures and risk their legitimacy because the committed partisans see this as their last chance to cement their collective lives’ work of remaking the judiciary and the country according to their bizarre philosophy.

Yup, absolutely. I think it’s wrong to treat the Iran War as simply one bad error that happened to the Trump Admin rather than the entirely logical consequence of the way it operates. If it wasn’t Iran, it would almost certainly have been something else
FWIW, I think a fuckup on this scale in time to wreck them electorally was *almost* inevitable from Day 1, precisely because this is the Special Birthday Boy presidency in which there are almost no limits on Trump's madness and every proposed policy disaster has a real shot at going all the way.
It is amazing, and sobering, to realize that had Trump not chosen to start this war for no good reason and against the advice of many of his senior ppl, Trump and the GOP would probably be doing... Ok. Not awesome, maybe losing the house, but ok.

My main contribution to "Batmam comics should deal with crime via systemic reforms" Discourse is that I was a 15 year old with that hot take too. I am now 31, and having grown up, want Batman and his ninja assassin son to punch the evil clown who kills people via laughing gas.

I think Smith could successfully sue Schmitt for defamation now, since he's restating the falsehood outside of the Senate hearing, and by this point he clearly knows what he's saying is false
Eric Schmitt is on The Charlie Kirk Show (yes it's still called that) -- and believe it or not, hosts are pretending he owned Smith with his embarrassingly botched gotcha

"You caught him in this NBA game too in Atlanta"

"Yeah," Schmitt says

There's no mention that Schmitt had all his facts wrong

Thinking about social and political shifts as “outside forces acting on a complex system that in no way resembles an individual person” will give you a far, far better schema to understand the world than thinking about ”what does the population believe”

My underlying point isn't REALLY a big philosophy argument, anyway - it's this. We are rapidly approaching an event horizon where philosophy arguments are going to be of real consequence and not dusty thought experiments. But I don't know what the actual resolution of the philosophical puzzles is.
Until recently we were effectively insulated from some of these questions by the practical absence of entities that pushed them forward. It was the stuff of thought experiments about space aliens or speculative computers. As the imagined entities become real, the uncomfortable choices are exposed.
