Because Sheik is Princess Zelda in disguise, the character's gender as a male in Ocarina of Time is a subject of controversy. In spite of the game (his only canonical appearance) explicitly referring to Sheik as male and presenting him with visually masculine characteristics, it is still in debate today by fans. In 2014, Nintendo officially attempted to solve the confusion. One employee stated "The definitive answer is that Sheik is a woman - simply Zelda in a different outfit." However, this commentary is inconsistent with other official sources citing Sheik as male. The inconsistencies in Super Smash Bros. appearances further complicate the matter for fans, though it should be noted that these are non-canonical. Through ROM hacking of his model in Ocarina of Time, by removing some of his hair and the part of the clothing covering his mouth, it is possible to see Sheik's face entirely, revealing the character is indeed a male figure.
