I always tell them not to get flustered by the first couple of assignments because you're learning what the expectations are. By the end of the semester, you'll know exactly what to do. Usually that spurs them on, but seems to not be working this semester.

I’ve been hearing from colleagues and seeing it myself. It’s as if students who do poorly on the first and/or second assignment would rather just drop or quit the class instead of continuing on or asking how to improve. It makes no sense.

He finally told us about the attacks just before the bell rang for the next period.

Years later, I ran into him while I was a substitute teacher. I brought up that memory to him, and he said, “You were right. I didn’t know what to do. I was afraid of traumatizing y’all by turning on the TV.”

That morning, we were doing group work when the vice principal walked in and whispered something in his ear. I watched the color drain from his face as the vice principal walked out and locked the door. I watched this normally gregarious man debate whether to tell us what was going on.

Agreed. The only reason we know they exist is because they say something “controversial” once or twice a week and their social media teams blanket the internet with them.
