2 October 1942 | A transport of 210 Jews deported from #Drancy in occupied France arrived at #Auschwitz. After the arrival selection, 34 men & 22 women were registered in the camp (none survived).

The remaining 154 people were murdered in a gas chamber. Salomea Strul was among them.

2 October 1933 | Italian Jewish girl Rina Di Veroli was born in Rome.

She arrived at #Auschwitz on 23 October 1943 in a transport of 1,035 Jews deported from Rome. She was among 839 of them murdered in gas chambers after the selection.

Latin had a word “ū̆ncia” which meant ‘one part of something’. But because the Romans often counted things in 12s (like 12 inches in a foot), it came to mean ‘one-twelfth’, eventually yielding words like “inch” and “ounce” (which was originally ⅟₁₂ of a pound rather than ⅟₁₆).

The word “alphabet” comes from the names of the first two letters of the Classical Greek alphabet, “álpha” and “bêta”.

A similar term developed for the names of the Germanic runic alphabets: The Scandanavian runes were called “futhark”, taken from the names of the first six letters of the script: ⟨F, U, Þ, A, R, K⟩ (the letter thorn ⟨Þ⟩ represented a “th” /θ/ sound).

"in a pickle" to mean "in trouble" started around the 1560s according to etymonline.com. "pickle" originally refered to a sauce and eventually came to be associated with a cucumbers because they are preserved in a brine liquid

Today marks the 50th anniv. of the release of Rush's 1st live album - 1976's "All the World's a Stage". Recorded on June 11-13th at Massey Hall in Toronto on the 2112 tour, it peaked at #40 on Billboard, and was certified Gold by the RIAA on 11/16/77 and Platinum on 3/4/81
