It's no wonder society has gone all to flinders when the end purpose of human evolution was just to get these three voices together. Nothing else has really mattered much since. We've served our purpose as a species.

I started my PhD program with an eight week old at home, sole income being my doctoral stipend, in a history program, in Knoxville, TN. And every month we got a new book to read to my son, free, mailed to us, so my kid, my kids, grew up in rooms full of books even when I had no money.

That's Dolly.

I don’t have much to add to the tributes except to say that she was the rare person who only grew more kind, decent, and compassionate with fame. The best of us.

Also, you should listen to this wonderful podcast episode about the global appeal of “Tennessee Mountain Home.” It choked me up.

Dolly Parton had a hammer. She had a bell. She had a song.

It was the hammer of justice.
It was the bell of freedom.
It was a song about love between her brothers and her sisters all over this land.

Not only a great painter, the late David Hockney had the most engaged and enquiring mind of his generation of artists. He never stopped experimenting and, like Picasso, brought passion and exactitude to every medium he touched. His sense of colour was spectacular but I truly loved his drawings.
