When Sony launched the PlayStation in 1994, the controller only featured a D-pad because most games were still designed around digital movement. As 3D games became more advanced, Sony put out the Dual Analog Controller and the iconic DualShock.

No fancy monsters. No new maps. Just a circle on a piece of paper, and suddenly everyone at the table is paying attention. If you run D&D, this might be the easiest upgrade you try this month.

What would you put on yours?

Every MMO seems to have a different name for it
Item Level, Gear Score, Combat Power, they all exist for the same reason: to estimate how powerful your character is without checking every piece of gear individually
The problem is...A higher number doesn't always mean a better player.

Ask ten Magic players how Banding works...You'll probably get ten different explanations.
There's a reason it's still one of the most infamous mechanics in Magic history.

Old D&D didn't just give weapons different damage. They had different attack speeds too.

The GameCube's tiny discs became one of the console's most recognizable features.
They helped reduce piracy and improve performance, but they also meant some games needed two discs to fit everything.
Do you think Nintendo made the right call?

Most MMO players know what the Global Cooldown is. Far fewer know why it exists.
It wasn't added just to make combat slower. It solved a design problem that early MMOs faced when players could chain abilities almost instantly.
Which do you prefer?

Why does your best gear always get replaced? It's not just to keep you grinding
Gear treadmills give players new rewards to chase, help new players catch up, and keep endgame content relevant
The interesting part is that not every MMO solves the problem the same way

What makes an open world feel alive?

It isn't map size. It's the landmarks that pull you forward, NPCs who have lives of their own, and systems that react to what you do.

Modern D&D players cast Haste without thinking twice.
In older editions of D&D...that same spell could permanently age your character by an entire year. Magic wasn't just powerful, it came with brutal consequences!

One of the weirdest things about old memory cards wasn't how small they were. It was that games used blocks instead of save slots.
Some games barely used any whereas others filled your card surprisingly fast.

Psionics used to be one of the strangest parts of Dungeons & Dragons
Instead of using spell slots, many characters relied on Power Points, unique disciplines, and even mental combat systems that worked completely differently from traditional magic

Magic Resistance wasn't always advantage on saving throws.

In older editions of D&D, many monsters had a percentage chance to ignore a spell before it ever took effect. That one rule made spellcasting feel completely different in high-level encounters.

You think you've seen everything from your favorite childhood games... Then someone uncovers official Crash Bandicoot trading cards that most fans never even knew existed.

What's one gaming collectible from your childhood you wish you still had?

Healing in MMOs has changed more than almost any other role.

What started as keeping a single tank alive evolved into raid-wide healing, shields, and predicting incoming damage before it happens.

Which era of MMO healing do you think was the most fun?

The Doctor Who Commander decks gave Suspend exactly what it was missing.

Instead of waiting around for powerful spells, The Tenth Doctor lets you manipulate time counters, extend Vanishing permanents, and build an entire strategy around planning several turns ahead.

Split Second doesn't make a spell truly uncounterable...But it gets surprisingly close.
While it's on the stack, players can't cast spells or activate most abilities, making it one of the most feared mechanics in Magic.

One of the strangest rules in D&D 3rd Edition wasn't about combat. It was about multiclassing.
If your class levels got too far apart, you could lose 20% of all the XP you earned. It's another forgotten rule that's hard to imagine in modern D&D.

The Nintendo DS didn't have one correct way to use the second screen.
Some games used it for maps. Some used it for menus. Others built the entire game around touch controls. That freedom is what made the DS library so creative.

Archenemy Commander pits one player against the entire table, complete with powerful Scheme cards that trigger every turn. It feels less like traditional Commander and more like taking down a raid boss with your friends.

Instead of everyone having the same goal, each player gets a hidden role and a secret objective. This variant feels like a mix of Commander and Mafia, where bluffing and politics become just as important as the cards you're playing.

Today, wireless controllers are something we barely think about.

Back in 2002, that wasn't the case.

The Nintendo WaveBird proved that a wireless controller helped pave the way for the controllers we use today.

One of my favorite things about older D&D books was the monster ecology sections.
Instead of only getting a stat block, you'd learn how monsters survived, interacted with other creatures, and fit into the setting. I
