Hungary's Paks nuclear plant is close to complete shutdown due to low water levels on the Danube

The river just hit the lowest level in more than a century, amid an ongoing European drought and heatwave

We are in the third drought in five years. We have the National Trust and NFU - those radical types - sounding the alarm on unprecedented temperatures. But so little from any single figure in politics talking about the climate crisis.

A joint statement by Israeli NGOs, Friday 24 July:

‘Urgent call to the international community to take immediate action to stop Israel's violence and prevent pogroms by settler militias and the Israeli army across the West Bank.

In recent days, violence by settler militias, enabled and supported by the Israeli army, has escalated across the West Bank, including the torching and destruction of Palestinian property, and the forced expulsion of families and communities.

Here's Andy Burnham committing to a fossil fuel phase out and the @fossiltreaty.bsky.social last year.

The science is extremely clear, we already have far more fossil fuels than can be burned if we are to stay within the Paris #climate targets & prevent catastrophic warming.

Absolutely wild. Read that again: the *actual* costs of *just wildfire smoke* are higher than the currently projected costs of *all climate impacts combined*.
We didn't previously integrate wildfire-smoke costs into the supposed cost of climate change for the US, and it turns out to be bigger than all those other costs combined. Oops! Gosh I wonder if we're underestimating anything else. Probably shoulda done something about this. Ah well.
What Worries Me Most About This Wildfire Smoke
We didn’t know days like this could happen. Then we learned how bad they really are.

The actions Starmer said Israel had "the right" to take are precisely those cited by the ICC when issuing Netanyahu's arrest warrant

For those of us who see Palestinians as human beings, this was Starmer's defining moment.

It is not sustainable to behave in this way while leading the nominally progressive party in a two party system. Starmer's unpopularity is not one of life's great mysteries.

The EU prepares to rewrite its key law protecting rivers, groundwater + wetlands.

The Commission says it's to remove 'bottlenecks' slowing critical minerals mining.

Campaigners say the EU has "not presented a shred of evidence" water protections cause 'bottlenecks':

The new Director-General of the BBC (ex Google operations boss) guts some of the cheapest and best programmes on the World Service

The Inquiry and the Fifth Floor both platformed Africans affected by Ebola, in ways we just DON’T HEAR OTHERWISE

They are excellent and the BBC will can them. Tragic.

We spoke to one young family this weekend, who have a six month old. They live in one room. They are limited in the work they can do. They get £50 total a week and £30 goes on baby foid. They have a bed and two chairs. No toys. Nothing.
Musk is a generationally repulsive monster. But he didn't make the Today Program's Justin Webb say that migrants in NI “have been able to come here and get access to services’ that local people can’t”. He didn't make the BBC head its live coverage of the pogroms with “Belfast Knife Attack Latest”.
