Thanks to all who came to our Tallis gig last night. What fun it was!
Now might I recommend visiting the I Fagiolini YouTube channel at 6pm tonight? Robert H is presenting an intro to Monteverdi's 1610 Vespers to go along with Fag's fabulous new recording of the work

Byrd remained a Catholic during the Protestant revolution. Did Tallis? We don't know for sure, but the joy in Tallis's Missa Puer natus est nobis and Byrd choosing Tallis as godfather to his son provides circumstantial evidence. Come and judge for yourself! This Sat, Cambridge.

This Saturday we'll take you on an amazing stylistic journey with Thomas Tallis:
Eton Choirbook style under Henry VIII, then musical austerity under the early Protestants, then Catholic luxury under Mary Tudor, then his late style under Elizabeth. See you there!

It was today 500 years ago (!) that Morales was appointed maestro at Avila Cathedral.
The late, great Bruno Turner advised us to include a setting of the Lessons on the album where there was a "greater than 50% chance that it was written by Morales". So here we are.

Today is the Feast of the Transfiguration when Jesus went all glowy and Peter started wittering about putting up tents for the important new people on the scene.
Regardless of the weirdness, Vivanco wrote a beautiful motet for the occasion. What a trooper.

We're not saying, but Byrd was in no doubt that Tallis had the crown.

Allegri's a little after our time but this track's sure worth a listen: the Miserere (stop yawning!) sung at the right pitch and with suitably florid ornamentation. It also has the best tenor suspension in the world. This will be 14 mins of your life well spent.
