This afternoon, I also had the chance to spend time with some of their family members, remembering those 40 souls. We will never forget their loved ones' heroism and sacrifice. We will never forget what happened on September 11, 2001.

They were ordinary people who woke up on a Tuesday morning in September, kissed their loved ones goodbye, and got on a plane to go to work or visit family — just like millions of Americans do each day.

The 40 heroes who summoned the courage to stare evil in the face and fought back prevented even more death and destruction on one of our nation’s darkest days. They weren’t soldiers trained to fight in war or first responders prepared to run towards danger.

But we cannot resort to violence as a way to settle those disagreements. It’s not who we are.

We all need to do our part to take down the temperature, condemn political violence, and actually work together to keep advancing the values and freedoms that are at the core of who we are as a nation.
