Can you read guilt on someone's face?
A facial expression is an observation. Emotion is an inference. Guilt is a legal conclusion.
New courtroom research shows why emotion recognition requires caution.
Looking guilty ≠ being guilty.

CJTV RELEASE: Corie Walsh is accused—not convicted.

Exposure to the Clancy trial does not prove imitation. “Devil” language does not prove Satanism, psychosis, or insanity.

Evidence before explanation.

Your personality may be relatively stable. Your behavior isn't.

Research shows substantial within-person variation in Big Five personality states across situations.

Trait ≠ State ≠ Behavior.

Personality describes tendencies—not a behavioral script.

A huge new Nature study identified 1,260 genetic variants associated with Big Five personality traits.

But genes aren't destiny. Personality reflects biology AND environment.

YOU DON'T JUST FIND EVIDENCE. YOU DECIDE WHAT TO LOOK FOR.
This is much better than another generic “forensic bias” story.

A LABEL IS NOT AN EXPLANATION.
Criminal justice and behavioral science depend heavily on classification.
Violent offender.
Delinquent youth.
High-risk individual.
Callous-unemotional traits.
Repeat offender.
September 2, 2026 at 12:35 PM
Calling someone violent, delinquent, callous, or criminal describes something about behavior.

It doesn't explain why it happened.

Family. Peers. Cognition. Emotion. Environment. Development.

A label can end the question exactly where science should begin.

Forensic error → investigative assumption → suspect selection → prosecution → verdict.

Each decision may seem rational based on what came before.

The problem may not be one bad actor.

It may be an error cascade.

Researchers tested whether showing eyewitnesses crime-related photographs before a lineup improved their ability to determine whether the culprit was actually present.

It didn't.

The article was published online August 29 in Psychology, Crime & Law.

Crime-related photographs do not improve eyewitnesses’ ability to detect the culprit’s presence within the lineup
In two experiments, we tested whether reinstating elements of a crime by presenting crime-related photographs during police lineups increases eyewitnesses’ ability to detect the culprit’s presence ...

DNA can help predict aspects of appearance. But a prediction isn't a photograph.

When forensic probability becomes a human-looking face, does it become psychologically more convincing than the evidence warrants?

Prediction ≠ identification.

Surveillance debates usually ask what police can see.

A database built from 242M+ audit records suggests another question:

Should citizens be able to see how surveillance systems are being searched?

Accountability may require transparency about the watcher, not just the watched.

AI policing isn't only a technology question. It's a legitimacy question.

New research examines what predicts public support for police AI.

The bigger issue may be this:

Do people trust the technology—or the institution using it?

Research highlighted today reports that groups of AI agents can spontaneously converge toward majority opinions, even without being explicitly programmed to conform. The experiments suggest collective AI behavior can produce dynamics that aren't obvious from studying individual models alone.
