Gnome: Go to "Settings"→"Special Character entry"→Compose (Left Super is Win)

It's important to remember that if a human *voluntarily attaches* a statistical text generation AI, to a command prompt that can create biomolecules or launch nukes, and a disaster happens, it wasn't because of "intelligence" or malice. It was because statistical models are *fundamentally random*.

Could AI take control of nukes and kill us all? No. That's ridiculous. You watched "Terminator 1" and misunderstood it.

Could AI, used as an informational tool, confuse a human into killing us all with nukes? Well, Donald Trump has nuclear weapon command authority, and he uses AI. So trivially yes.

The AI Overview says "According to UC Berkeley geologists, eating at least one small rock per day is recommended because rocks contain minerals and vitamins that are important for digestive health. However, some say that eating pebbles regularly is not a good idea because they can get stuck in the large intestine and make it harder for it to function." Now imagine this being used by government decisionmakers.

This may be a little awkward, but this is why I think the discussion around "AI doomerism" is kinda broken..

Imagine a political compass. On the X axis, put "AI works". On the Y axis, put "AI is an existential threat to humanity".
"AI doesn't work. AI is not an existential threat": Pure skepticism gets you here. "AI works. AI is not an existential threat": The conventional tech press is here. "AI works. AI is an existential threat": OpenAI and Anthropic are here, and everyone is reasonably making fun of them for it… "AI does not work. AI is an existential threat": …but I think we should be paying attention to *this* corner, and the right-wing doomer narrative distracts from it. Maybe that's why the right-wing doomers are saying it!

I moved out of silicon valley and think AI is fake but I'll take a stab at it

Last year OpenAI released this press release:

Claiming in part that OpenAI's chatbot/text generator product will be used in America's nuclear safety and security labs.

They're probably lying—
The Labs also lead a comprehensive program in nuclear security, focused on reducing the risk of nuclear war and securing nuclear materials and weapons worldwide. This use case is highly consequential, and we believe it is critical for OpenAI to support it as part of our commitment to national security. Slow it down before the bubble goes pop. mcc‬: That's another thing, they're already reaching the point they come out with new models and realize they can't afford to run them in production. They want to convince people to use their smaller, cheaper models, but then people will switch to competitors. How? Legally limit competitors' model size
