Retired since December 2024. Enjoying life. 451
I was about to write that I usually dislike story within stories but then I realised that I like Hyperion so much so clearly that statement would have been false. And after a few chapters, I actually like it quite a lot. I’m intrigued by that SF story and mixing it with family drama is fun.

Just finished it. What a delight. And what’s even more interesting to me in particular is that it reminds me of my literature class back in France and how my professors back then taught me almost the opposite of what King wrote here. Maybe it’s the language. Or maybe that’s why he’s King.

Read a big portion of it on my flight to 上海. I don’t know if I’d ever write a novel someday but it helps me to understand why I like one or dislike another. It helps me to better understand what I like too, to identify the elements I care about. It helps me to shape my taste a bit more clearly.

I tried to watch this. I tried again and again and again and again. I know it's a great movie. I want to watch it. I want to like it. I want to embrace it and write about it. But it is so boring. I just can't connect with it. I don't know why. It drives me crazy.

I always felt that, like many great authors I read, he influenced me tremendously. I just didn't know how, in which way. And reading this book makes me realise that more than anything, he gave me the passion for books, helped me to develop an insatiable curiosity and the desire to create.

I still remember the first time I read It. I read it in french. And I was 15 already. And every page made me think of my band of friends. I was conflicted with spending time reading more or taking my bike and seeing my friends and go on an adventure.

I’m so grateful to have friends who know me so well. What a great book. A book about life.

Just finished it. Those last pages were so hard to read. Took me a while because I couldn’t stop my tears. Glad I had my shades on me. Glad also that there is a great ice cream shop serving kiwi flavored ones that taste amazing. I don’t have words to describe my experience. It’s personal and deep.

When she started singing, that short passage, that sentence, made me cry. I was expecting that. But somehow, I was still moved to tears. And I have to take a short break.

I like all those passages. I recently started thinking about death a lot and I agree that knowing how to die might help with the living part. Works for me. I also like the passage about emotions and how important it is to not fear them and instead try to embrace all of them. It’s a cool book.

Didnt have much time to read as I’m overwhelmed by my trip to 北京. I finally got some time this morning. It turned out to be the perfect moment, the perfect time for me to go through those pages. It is beautiful. It helps me to be at peace in the bustling city, protects me from the noise.

Next time, give me a bit more days, I’ll take you outside of the « petit Paris », where actual people live. It’s pretty cool too.

Just finished it. And it leaves me with the same impression as I started it. It is more like a recruitment manual for some sort of religious cult than something truly useful to unlock creativity. Or maybe I’m just not an artist.

And that constant preaching tone is annoying. I feel like going to the church or listening to one of those (bad) teachers at school. It also doesn’t help when the author uses god as a joker constantly to reassure the readers that somehow, it will be alright if they follow the path.

In the last quarter and I don’t know how to assess it. On the one hand, I like some of the quotes. The one about jealousy is pretty cool. I also like some of the definitions such as the one about perfectionism. But everything feels like coming out of those motivational posters.

Maybe this book exposes my lack of spirituality. And maybe I’m just not that open minded. I’ll finish it first and see how I feel about it. So far, it’s boring and feels almost patronising.
September 10, 2026 at 8:08 PM
I also wonder whether I’m the right target for this book. Maybe I was when my friends recommended it to me and now I’m not anymore? The author explained that god isn’t specifically defined in a religious way but so far, it definitely feels religious.

Even if this is exactly the formula to build great habits and to have a great life, I still don’t want it. Because the joy is the exploration, the discovery. The adventure. In a way, the strongest point this book makes is that the journey is what matters and ironically, this book kills it a bit.
September 9, 2026 at 5:12 AM
I wonder who are the people who aren’t satisfied with their lives, believe they have bad habits, read this book, and still fail. I really want to know how they think about it. Do they feel patronised? Do they feel guilty? But my final reaction is the one I discussed earlier: I don’t want a map.

On the one hand, I don’t need this book since I’m satisfied with my life. One thing it does is to inflate my ego by giving some sort of external validations. So, this isn’t addressed to me. But on the other hand, maybe this book is exactly for people like me: we read it to feel good about ourselves.
