This is still going on - MFC, Bond Store, Capital E all will have to be dealt with. The relevance is that WCC's finances were stretched dealing with this, leading to politicians deciding there were votes in cancelling projects like the golden mile to reduce rates. (A decision I disagree with.)

Canterbury was a completely different situation. They (rightly) got $16b from government plus many times that in insurance settlements. Wellington owners incl WCC mostly just got buildings that no one can/will occupy, but not written off, but with double or triple the insurance costs.

There are many reasons for WCC's financial woes, but people also forget just how much the 2016 quake affected this city. Buildings destroyed, pipes wrecked, insurance and construction cost escalation.

But we at least have a few metres of nice new garden and cycleway on Cambridge/Kent to remind us all of what could've been. 😞

They have logging and random audits - that's generally how these stories come about.

The fact it keeps happening suggests a perceived low chance of being caught, or a lack of serious consequences so officers aren't worried about being caught.
