i realize i've been tweeting a lot about AI lately but. this is absolutely it. the biggest giveaway someone was really kind of a shitty engineer was always if they viewed raw line output or their typing speed in the editor as their bottleneck. these people now really like AI and it doesn't mean much
The claim is that using AI to code is beneficial because it makes development faster. But typing code is not the bottleneck, it never was. Making decisions is the hard part and something that LLMs are and always will be incapable of doing

this argument only works if you assume AI is the next industrial revolution and we aren't instead basically talking abt uber before they hiked the prices
People who aren’t using AI to code at this point are delusional or lying, trying to ride a horse down the highway and backing up the traffic instead of asking “what can we do to make cars safer and electric.” They have no ethical high ground

this was one of the most upsetting things to hear visiting them in person, but it's not surprising. old-web libertarians like brewster loooooove crypto, and AI is something they can be just as annoying about while also being a little useful (you gotta realize they spend most of their time doing OCR)

one of the most important lessons i learned in my last job is most software is easy, and you can just do stuff. but most engineers in industry have a low opinion of their own capabilities, so they never try in earnest. i think this is primarily what AI preys on

function calls, monomorphization, and return type inference. pretty close to being able to lower this to the mid-level IR :)

remembering when minecraft made the jump from intentionally silly "achievements" to progression-enumerating "advancements" and right then and there a huge chunk of the game's soul died
Maybe a hot take, but I often really dislike achievements in games. Why is not playing the game enough satisfaction? Is it for bragging rights?
(In game achievements are often better, if they are tied to a challenge and then you get a reward)

crazy to think that AAA games have sucked so bad for this long
to me it's kinda wild that they had "modern AAAA video game" look and feel so figured out 21 years ago. to my eye the kinetic energy and composition of a third person big budget game has not changed from this in two decades.
Project Big 2005. PS3 dreams were made of this.
