A broken teacup became an art form. In 15th-century Japan, kintsugi turned cracks into gold seams, and the repair can take weeks to cure.

Fun fact that still messes with me: botanically, bananas count as berries and strawberries don't. Fruit categories were clearly decided by a committee that never ate a fruit salad.

Beach sand can be full of magnetite, so a plain magnet pulls the iron out and leaves the silica behind. Then a 1,500 °C furnace turns it into metal.

Fun fact: honey almost never spoils. Jars found in ancient Egyptian tombs were still edible after thousands of years. Honestly, better shelf life than most of us have after 9 pm. What's the oldest thing in your cupboard right now? 🍯

Fun science fact: a day on Venus lasts longer than its year. It takes 243 Earth days to spin once but only 225 to circle the Sun. Birthday planning there would be a nightmare.

Comfort rewatches are underrated. You know every line, nothing can surprise you, and that's exactly the point. Which film do you keep going back to?

🧛🦑 For its size, it has the largest eyes of any animal known, which help it detect the dim light of bioluminescence. To hide in the dark, it pulls its webbed arms over its head so only the dark inner side of its “cloak” is exposed.

Clocks go back tonight in most of Europe. Everyone gets a free hour, and somehow we'll all spend it confused about whether the oven clock updates itself.

The way these 2 pigs are dancing. Pigs are among the smartest farm animals, and these hops and spins are social play that builds bonds and burns off energy.

A small rule for how-to guides: put the warning before the step, not after it. "But first, unplug it" is a lot less useful once someone has already pressed the button.

A good how-to guide answers the question the reader has at step 4, not the one the writer had at step 1. Reading your own guide like a total beginner is the hardest edit of all. Which step do guides you follow always seem to skip?

"Just circling back" is the email equivalent of walking past someone's desk very slowly. Hopeful, slightly menacing, and somehow always arrives at 4:55 on a Friday.

every sport has a fun term for a weird little oddball occurrence. basketball has the wedgie, where the ball gets stuck between the rim and backboard. football has the doink, where a kick bounces off a goal post. baseball has baseball games

Quietly pro-semicolon over here. It's a comma that went to the gym: strong enough to hold two full sentences together without either of them falling over. Where do you stand, semicolon fan or firmly team full stop?

Dutch has a lovely word for this season: "uitwaaien". Going out into strong wind just to clear your head. No goal, no destination, just weather doing the editing for you. Which word from your language deserves to go international?
