My best guess is that because everything in RWBY is inspired by stories and mythology, some guy at some point went through something like what Jesus went through and that was enough to allow a cross to be shorthand for suffering and burdens and Qrow wears one because that's how he sees himself.

Ninne's always ready and willing to help where she can in most cases. However when a colleague or a superior is acting weird, she has a bad habit of thinking, "Eh, they probably know what they're doing. Best not risk screwing things up by getting involved."

Ninne's laugh is usually a light musical chuckle. But if something really really gets her, she will sometimes exhibit a smoke-alarm style of laughter consisting of brief piercing shrieks that can break glass in between long stretches of almost inaudible wheezing.
