It can never be said enough how much Joe Rogan is THE nexus point for mainstreaming conspiracy theories. His show has caused more harm than Alex Jones ever did, including helping to mainstream Alex Jones! It’s wild he has faced zero cultural consequences for the harm he is still actively causing.
When you ask MAHA/anti-vaxxers types how they got into the movement, they mostly report that they saw something on Joe Rogan or Fox News or a meme on Facebook.

A lot of them *have* been negatively judged by doctors, but that usually comes after the conspiratorial beliefs, not before.
This is pure speculation on my part, but I wonder if it’s the exact opposite. We see MAHA amongst the privileged more often because they’re used to being able to find and pay for solutions to their medical problems, and so when they CAN’T, they turn to snake oil

Or maybe it wasn't waiting. Maybe it was already happening. This week a...

Genuinely abundant, cheap, accessible energy has vastly more liberatory potential than AI, for vastly more people -- especially more poor people. Which, I guess, is your answer.
Have you seen any reporting on how solar power generation in the USA is 5 times higher than it was in 2020 in mainstream outlets? If not, why do you think this is not being widely covered the same way other large technological changes are?
Official monthly data is in today, and US solar power generation hit a new record high, up 20% compared to this time last year!

It’s worse than this. Having been in the room with many of them (long ago, before I knew they were psychopaths), the tycoons who are left running the industry have an active contempt for ordinary people, including their own workers. They actively want to oppress, control and punish them.
Tech execs do not have, like, a theory of mind for people who aren’t tech execs. If they did, they wouldn’t be so frequently baffled by how repulsive normal people think their whole deal is right now

In dishonor of Ross Douthat's last NYT column, I'm breaking my self-imposed ban on reading him—smug bad faith, whiny victimization, and steadfast refusal to let evidence affect opinion—and will screenshot and comment.

This is the column if you want to read it yourself (I don't recommend it).

A very serious Rural Politico once told me "Dems have to go to farmer meetings! We gotta be where the people are!"

I was in fact in a farmer meeting at that very moment!

So I live-texted him the meeting. They were complaining that they want indentured workers that they don't have to pay or feed.
There would be more pushback if folks left of center were more serious about outreach. But folks aren't despite the fact that our system does give disproportionate power to rural areas.

But instead of taking that as the rules of the game as it exists, and actually organizing, we complain about it.
