working in games IS a choice. there is no falling into it. only doggedly chasing after it like a dog chases a bone. and that's why it hurts when you finally gain some footing and then lose it. because not only does it take SO MUCH to break in, but for a lot of folks, it becomes your life

if you're leaving games media, know that you can find better horizons and do cooler things. the job market is shit and, like.... that might continue to suck for a long time, but games media can be such a stifling space and you've got more to give than you think

I'll even take this one further: I never would have been a regular cast member on NVC if Brian Altano had not quietly, with 0 fanfare, stepped back to make room for me, and if Seth had not repeatedly adjusted the recording schedule to ensure I could be there. I will *never* forget that.
They willingly gave up spots on camera for others. They used their clout internally to push for women in particular to be on camera next to them, benefitting from their notoriety. They rightfully bullied the shit out of people who said nasty, bigoted things in the comments. (3/x)

The IGN layoffs are pretty shocking. Not that they haven’t been before, but seeing Seth and Brian on there is actually wild bc there are certain legacy folks that you’d think are “safe“ from these things and it looks to be that’s not the case

The fun of journalism as a whole right now — not just games — is that everybody is starved for work so execs can get away with underpaying freelancers. That's how content mills like Valnet stay in business. Then those freelancers will be laid off and others will take their place at lower pay
Yes its fundamentally stupid for IGN to layoff senior staff before the biggest video game in our lifetimes drop.
