If there's any dispute that games are a medium for art & self-expression, it's because most of that vanishes when you reduce the medium's history to a list of products & release dates.

The most fun thing to learn about this scene was the importance of Yugoslavian "New Wave" punk-rock for the computer fans.
This music was included on the tapes of "Kontraband 2," an adventure game where players travel in time to visit Yugoslavia in the year 2000 😨

p.s. when you develop enough of a critical eye to find the flaws in the things that you used to think were untouchably, impossibly perfect, you realize that it is okay to make imperfect things. the next step from there is "it's ok for ME to make imperfect things"

the thing about indie games is that if someone designs one single game I love, I’ll get whatever they make for the rest of their lives and pretty much always have a good time. people are so attached to ip but imo you really gotta know the creators.

Discussion of new Fallout projects should be a big, exciting thing, even if all the games are years off. But doing it as a "well, we just made deep cuts but these studios can still produce video games, honest!" kind of damage control thing just sucks.

I think if you needed any more evidence that the cuts are shortsighted and focused on cutting as deep and as fast as possible with little regard for the future, this is pretty definitive. That engine felt like magic in some spots. A colossal waste of talent and resources.

As the director of a historical video game preservation institution, and someone who has dedicated his entire adult life to this cause, this is accurate. We have attempted to work with the industry's trade organization to find a legal path forward, but they refuse to offer a meaningful alternative.
piracy is the only extant form of media preservation that exists in games right now, you might find it morally reprehensible but there is literally no other institution that will keep games alive in 25, 50 years' time
