I just find it hard to comprehend the mindset of someone that would defend this. Saying this is justified — good, even — is so plainly outrageous, it should be an opinion that exists on the absolute fringe periphery of our society. As it stands, it is the default position of our leaders and media
Google finally updated some of its satellite images of Gaza and my god, it's horrific. The entirety of Rafah has been demolished. The majority of Khan Younis is in ruins. Entire towns completely leveled and erased of the map.

People keep asking about the mechanism for the AI apocalypse. There is a simple answer: Yud et al think the AI will invent nanobots and use them to disassemble us into molecules it uses to build more GPUs for itself.

i dont know how to get this through to the true believers but i simply do not want to ask a machine to do my work for me. i dont want it to communicate with other people for me. i dont want it to plan my vacations or make my agendas or anything because all of that IS my life

This is what the growth of surveillance is going to bring. Not safety from crime, but new, non-criminal acts redefined as criminal so as to give the police an excuse to exercise power.

A nauseating spectacle of spite.

it tells them to drink every hour and messages them to make sure they're drinking as soon as they wake up.

To start, I am not personally attacking Chiang. I agree with his conclusion that LLMs are not conscious minds and that it is foolish to assume that they are or might be.

You can read this essay from me arguing against AI consciousness if you doubt that:

NEW BLOG FOR YOU

Google's energy consumption numbers in their new climate report are mind-blowing. 2 years ago they flipped from linear to exponential growth, and their climate impact is blowing out, too.

A WILD testament to the obscene bloat and waste of GenAI:
