My Christmas cactus is starting to flower, way earlier than normal. I’m hoping it’s not an indicator of a cold season to come (and fingers crossed they don’t all drop off)

I’m half way through Kate Foster’s 2nd book, ‘The King’s Witches’, set in Edinburgh in 1589 amid the witchcraft frenzy. It’s a breathtaking read which is building up to something I know is going to be horrendous (no witchy skills required to deduce that) #Books #HistoricFiction

A visit to an extraordinary place today, Hospitalfield House in Arbroath. Once a family home, it became an art college in the early 20th century and continues to support artists to this day: hospitalfield.org.uk/about #Angus #Scotland
Known as the Flying Monk, this is a carving of the upper torso of a monk on an external turret of a historical building. This is a nod to the building’s original purpose of providing accommodation to pilgrims on route to Arbroath Abbey Another Monkish reference, this time inside the house. This is an intricately carved statue of a monk sitting reading intently. He wears his robe and wears sandals and sits with one leg crossed over the other. He has a deep expressive face. This carving is within a staircase A beautifully magnificent marble fireplace with three female statues representing Peace, Contentment and Plenty. Peace holds a dove, Contentment has her hands intertwined and Plenty carries a crop of barley. There are many other features on this fireplace and at the centre is a huge iron burner with its front feet cast in the shape of serpents. There is a Latin family motto that translates to ‘know thy self’ engraved in the stone.

Out today at Lunan Bay in Angus. Never been before and this has to be one of the most beautiful beaches in Scotland. There were two sea caves full of stunning rocks and one drew by attention as it looked like it was a Planet #Angus #Scotland

Part of the ruins of Arbroath Abbey, the site commonly understood to be where Scotland’s Declaration of Independence (the Declaration of Arbroath) was written in 1320. #Scotland
The West Front and Nave of what remains of Arbroath Abbey. The Abbey was founded in 1178 and buildings expanded over the years with completion in 1233. Part of a large circular window remains. There are the remains of two tall towers at either side. Much of the building is constructed in local red sandstone. It is amazing to think of the stonemasons and craftspeople who worked on such a magnificent structure. The Abbey was attacked by the English in 1350 and left in a dire state. It also suffered a fire in 1380.
