Every single September I’m taken by surprise at how physically and mentally exhausting a whole day of teaching can be. It’s a performance and it reduces me to a jibbering idiot by the end of the day!

An incredible new PhD opportunity at @uhihistory.bsky.social under Dr Nicola Martin: An Environmental History of the Jacobite Risings in Scotland.
This is a fresh and fascinating filter to apply to Jacobite Studies and the programme is under the very best of direction and care.

Just a wee reminder for anyone listening to politicians doing the ‘I condemn the violence but people have legitimate concerns’, shuffle, immigration in NI is 3.5% of the population. Most of them working in NHS, social care and other badly paid jobs.
Northern Ireland saw a second night of unrest with police using water cannon on rioters, as the Belfast stabbing attack victim's family said they were "disgusted" by the disorder
Further unrest in NI as victim's family calls for calm

If Muslims or members of the Asian and Black community had set fire to white people’s homes with children running for their lives, do you think we would be discussing legitimate concerns or focussing on who radicalised them and ideological and contributing cultural factors?

Here’s a video from the same podcast as linked in my previous post where you can hear the audio too. I love this because it really lays bare how LLMs fool us - but really they’re just slotting words into linguistic patterns that we’re familiar with. Genres like a podcast or LinkedIn post.

At this point being pro-AI is being a climate change denier and being very very relaxed about racial and sexual discrimination. Why would I want that?
This monologue from Hannah Einbinder on the show “Hacks” perfectly encapsulates the frustration many people feel about AI.
What are your thoughts?

Thank God Starmer is in charge, really. If it had been any of his immediate predecessors, we'd currently be at war with Iran, playing lapdog to a deranged US administration, unable to say what we were doing or why.

One day everyone will accept Netanyahu to be pure evil. It will be a mainstream consensus. At that point he will be used as a convenient sponge for all the crimes against humanity that have been perpetrated in his time. As if it all started and ended with him. Always remember - it was never just him
