More ethics and philosophy lessons from the Associate Professor of Divinity at Cambridge University. No, it's not about transubstantiation or the Last Supper, but how much a foreign money man needs to pay to lunch with Nigel Farage

This whole article, in my view, aims to blame Orr, and suggest Farage is innocent (everything above board).
Even the heading aims to blame the senior aide.

Harris admitting to sending unsollicited email to Jason Arday (who had asked him to stop) AND lying about the bullying incident in 1996. He claims he was cleared. He was in fact charged with misconduct.

Arday was aware of Harris' pattern of behaviour.

Crazy - it started with Cofnas saying "I can't disprove any of this but (for reasons unspecified) it can't be true" and the whole media ran with the assumptions of someone who not only has an axe to grind with Cambridge but also thinks black people can't be senior academics. Horrendous.

Imagine a man driven to kill himself because the British media destroyed his reputation based on lies. And then imagine that, even after his death, that same media carry on tormenting his family with the same soul destroying lies. Incredible, isn’t it. But here we are

This is important too from @thenerve.news. If you read that viral news piece from one anonymous student reproduced in Unherd, Times & Telegraph & pumped out as FB/Insta ads, you need to read this.

What Professor Jason Arday's students actually thought:

Students remember Jason Arday: ‘People would say how much they were looking forward to his classes’
A viral article by an anonymous student suggested the academic was a “terrible” teacher. Undergraduates at Durham, where he taught between 2019 and 2022, tell fellow alumna Michaela Makusha that their...

Yet TODAY, the Times can publish a piece today, citing the fraudulent marathons that Arday ran "on a broken leg", a claim he never made. It was a hairline fracture *that was reported at the time*.

And the headline of the piece? You cannot make this stuff up.

Here's Jason Arday's death - and the media's role in it - trending on social media, again.

And yet it's *nowhere* in the mainstream media today.

It's "fallen" out of the news cycle in the same way that Russian scientists "fall" out of windows.

One of the first "outrageous" claims I saw as Jason Arday's media hounding unfolded was that he ran 30 marathons in 35 days!

Wow!

What a thing to claim!

And the newspapers all suggested there was no evidence he actually did it.

Well, they clearly didn't look very hard 🙄

The more I look at the Arday story, the worse it gets. Even I fell for the disinformation flood and thought ‘flawed and vulnerable’ (like all of us). But a deeper dive reveals he was extraordinary talented (still vulnerable). And it’s that talent which his haters couldn’t abide

This worried me from the beginning: was there even anything much, academically, that would stick in the accusations?

I fear that once we have a full picture, many of the journalists who led this witch hunt against Arday will have lost interest and moved on

Jason Arday is owed a full investigation
The allegations of plagiarism that Cofnas surfaced? Liverpool John Moores had already investigated & cleared him & is *still* not being included in most articles. Jason Stanley explains why again there was a basic failure of journalistic understanding & why people took Cofnas’s framing over LJM’s

I’ve mapped the far-right semantic operation vs. Arday using the 5W1H method and 4 phases: conception, dissemination, amplification & transformation IRL.

It makes the production chain visible - and shows why starting the story with Cofnas misses how this was a racist attack from day 1, in 2023.

I have a strong sense that, the more people dig, the more innocent Jason Arday will become. Which just makes his death, and the circumstances leading up to it, more awful

I don't have easy access to these tools any more but academic work is heavily metricated. For many it's a measure of worth which is why so many run after citations and publish the slightest thought.

And the majority of papers have low or zero citations. Arday has a significant level of citations.
Will there be any accountability? The prob is was both right & left leaning news orgs & they’re circling the wagons. The lack of basic humanity & decency *after* the fact is perhaps what’s most depressing of all.

Anyway, Jason’s piece is here:

Jason Arday's death will/has quickly become about 'the media shouldn't be censored' & 'journalists shouldn't be condemned'. The discussion that should be had is why journalism can't calmy reflect & scrutinise itself. It's about the culture. The water we swim in. The knee-jerk response confirms this.
