In a world cursed by toony pseudo-immortality, where lethal experiences are often physically absurd and extreme instead of life-ending, there will inevitably become a kind of people who take a special interest in exploring these new extreme expressions of life. Many dark minds have learned to design the cruelest of cartoony experiences to inflict upon their fellow mortals... but very few have taken the leap past the expected culture of healing magic to mantle the challenge of healing toons from toony, presumably permanent injuries. Duarkin of the Amber Lamps is a “kitsune” healer who roams between Bolin, Koschylvania, and the Cardic territories. He is a pacifist and a coward by nature who is wholly dedicated to helping others heal from their wounds. Though his bedside manner and overall people skills are quite terrible. Duarkin has a deep inclination to view people as collections of parts and pieces, rather than a wholly individual person. In the medical field he has found a joy and comfort for his personal perspective, as it has empowered him to treat others as objects in need of repair and as salvageable material. Duarkin, however, is no doctor, and has never taken an oath to commit no harm. He’s just some foxy guy whose friend got permaflattened one day in some violent incident, and he was the only person to take their condition seriously when the village sorcerer resigned his friend to a forever-flimsy fate. With no innate magical talent, Duarkin resorted to using medicinal herbs he could concoct a healing salve with to smear on his friend. It helped soothe his flat friend’s subdermal aches, whilst the act of massaging the gel across their body loosened their malleable muscles back into alignment. Duarkin was quite pleased upon recognizing he had some power to restore comfort and ease of movement to his friend. However his heart fell when he understood that his friend still could not go outside without being carried away and tangled by the wind. As his friend rested inside Duarkin sulked at his village fountain and witnessed how elders in the village used canes to aid their hunched walking and wondered how he could get his friend to use them. He doubted that they would even have the strength to grip a cane, let alone lift one. He later saw injured gate guards used slings wrapped on their shoulder to hoist their arm for healing and came to a conclusion. After sourcing some thread from the local seamstress he prowled the nearby woods of his village in search of twigs. The next day Duarkin walked outside with his flattened-friend standing beside him with an arm wrapped over his shoulder. Affixed to every limb, between every joint, Duarkin had tied twigs and stiff beams of bark to his friend. Their flimsy form stood pressed between plates of bark and shoots of wood, with string tying each splint down. The village was shocked at the sight, and some even laughed and called his friend a “bark sandwich”. Whatever support they’d received was overshadowed by the horror Duarkin felt for his friend’s humiliation. He thought the entire village would be proud of the progress they’d made, and couldn’t let go of the few cruel remarks and looks. That night, whilst his friend remained in bed and rested off the aches from the splints’ weight, Duarkin snuck into the village kitchen to steal some mochi dough and play with some spices. His friend had only been eating whatever berries and fruit Duarkin could crush into a slurry for them to drink. With a paper-thin jawline, chewing had become an impossibility for them. Duarkin initially thought that might have been enough to get their body to heal, but soon realized that the food lacked enough body to help reinvigorate their own. One successful, experimental heist later and Duarkin returned to his friend’s hut with a heavy jug full of mochi and a vase of water. His flat friend groaned at the herbal and sweet aroma gushing from the jug, just before Duarkin began feeding them it one mochi-ball at a time. The texture is squishy, dense, and thick, and it gave his friend a tough time swallowing it despite its sugary, flowery taste. Duarkin spent the entire day sitting with his friend, feeding them sugary, medicinal dough and giving them water between tough gulps. On several occasions Duarkin noticed how the dough would collect in an awkward bulge in his friend’s torso, so he would have his friend lie on their back whilst he took a rolling pin and massaged the dough evenly distributed through-out their figure. After a day and night of ritual feeding and massaging Duarkin’s flat friend had become his slab friend. With splints re-secured Duarkin guided them into the privacy of the moonlight to walk around on their semi-flat limbs. His friend found their movements sluggish as their body squashed under its weight with every step, but they were mobile. After several weeks of physical rehabilitation on splints and a strict diet of medi-mochi, Duarkin’s friend gained the ability to walk on their own without splints, albeit with a significantly squishier body than before. They’d even regained their original shape, if slightly rounded at every corner. Duarkin still saw further challenges lying ahead for his friend, for physically interacting with others and performing labour were still quite difficult with a softened physique. However, he was quite content and even delighted to find more opportunity to help soothe his friend’s difficulties. Duarkin reflected upon the village sorcerer’s failure and resignation when it came to his friend’s supposed fate as flat paper. He reflected upon how his village largely reacted with fear and mockery when he found an avenue past their resignations and was saddened by the ignorance of his people and how deeply they trusted the wizard’s judgment. From that day on, Duarkin dedicated his life to developing non-magical methods using everyday items and simple techniques to restoring & healing the Toon-Traumatized. His friend, the village sorcerer’s apprentice, devoted themselves to developing better medicine with magic by finding avenues for magic to precisely aid the healing mechanisms in the natural body and world. Together they vowed to developing a science to healing which divorces power away from the magically gifted and places it more directly in the hands of the common folk. And in that endeavor they together invented the Amber Lamp: a crystalline, metal staff with a lantern constructed with a medicinal Amber Core from Twistupelo Trees. The staff uses a magical flame conjured inside of the red-resin core, which then burns the core like a slow candle. The heated core sits half-immersed in a cocktail of floral oils which burn into a soothing vapor. With a staff in each hand the two walked between villages to heal others and spread their knowledge and technique. They quickly became recognized for the orange, calming lights which they carried around with them. Eventually the name stuck and the two friends formed the world’s only nationless faction of healers: The Amber Lamps.
