In 1492, the southern kingdoms (of what is now Italy) were ruled by Spain. The Castillian and Aragonese kings of the day sent their bastards and failsons to watch over their Mediterranean inferiors. Meanwhile, Columbus came out of Genoa, a wealthy and autonomous republic in the north.

...Texas has continued sprawling and chewing up empty ranchland to build cheap, egalitarian-ish 'burbs.
Of course they had to generate a bajillion tons of extra CO2 in the process, but I think they beat us on the racial integration scoreboard.
