If Peltola selling out trans people is the right call from a political standpoint, why are people so worried about how trans people are responding?

Peltola made a decision. If it works, she’ll have been proven right. If it doesn’t work, that’s on her, not trans folks.

You can’t have it both ways.
how are we still doing this
Incredibly disappointing ad from Mary Peltola (D-AK) saying she neither supports "kids getting surgeries to change genders or men in girls bathrooms."

Yes, flipping the Senate is essential and can stop bad laws and bad judges from happening, but she can do it without my support from the lower 48.

The liberal notion of acquiescing to reduced-to-removed rights by fascists so everybody else can I guess defeat fascism with the power of the ballot betrays their perception of us: that our identities and sexes and genders and lives and loves are a choice and that we have been humored long enough

If you're on here telling trans people to shut up and vote, you should be angry that Republicans have manipulated you to such a degree. Why aren't you angry about it

I just honestly can't get over that Save Women Sports, an anti-trans group could only find five trans athletes competing K through 12.

Five. The NCAA president testified a year and a half ago or so that there were less than 10 college level trans athletes. What the fuck are we doing, people

I’m gonna keep saying it.

It‘s not purity tests. Or trans people. Or Black, disabled or queer people that got us Trump.

It’s cishet white guys.

you sound like a fool suggesting otherwise.

it really does feel as if Democrats en masse are telling trans ppl that they don't want us as part of their coalition. if you disagree with them – if you *want* trans ppl to be a part of the coalition – then please call these trans-exclusionary Dems DIVISIVE because they are DIVIDING OUR COALITION!
🧵 of excerpts from my latest essay “On Democrats Who Cave in Response to Anti-Trans Attack Ads.” it makes several points I haven't seen others making. here's a main one: many cis reactions reveal they don't actually view trans ppl as part of their coalition... juliaserano.medium.com/on-democrats...

this is probably the worst language i've seen a democrat use. saying "transgender ideology" is straight out of the right wing playbook. this is looking more and more like Labour, so I don't want to hear any more shit about how even the transphobic democrats broadly support our rights.
Holy shit.

Marcy Kaptur becomes the latest Dem to release an anti-trans ad, and its worse than all the rest combined.

"I voted WITH Republicans to keep transgender ideology out of schools, and let me be clear, boys should NOT play in girls sports."

This is getting out of control.

There's a big difference between withholding your vote from certain Dems and advocating for not voting unless a candidate is perfect.

And, let me also say: If you do decide to withhold a vote for a Dem, go out and vote. Leave that race blank, but vote otherwise.
I correct Will later in the thread and to his credit he posts my correction,

But I do not think it is unreasonable to look at a list like I made of anti-trans dems and withhold your votes from the WORST OFFENDERS, the ones calling trans girls men and advocating for healthcare restrictions.
I'll confess I'm shocked by this: seeing a respected progressive voice openly argue that it's better to defeat Democrats who have been flaky on trans rights than to secure Democratic control of the US Senate and US House.

Unbelievably foolish, short-sighted, self-sabotaging nonsense.

No candidate, regardless of party, will ever get my vote if they call me a "biological man" and advocate for laws targeting my community.

Its that simple.

I have never once dragged or piled on WS before, but this is an absolutely fucked-up take. rather than considering that a marginalized group may have a very different perspective & experiences than you, smear them all as a "cult" of sorts instead. that way you can dismiss their opinions en masse
ever since @eleanor.lockhart.contact pointed out to me that a lot of online trans discourse has the dynamics of a high-control group, I can't stop seeing it. "you can only trust your brothers and sisters in the group" is a tried-and-true social control mechanism

👇 THIS right here. Talarico, Turek, et al ARE THE ONES WHO CHOSE THOSE POSITIONS. if you're afraid those decisions may alienate pro-trans/LGBTQ+ voters, THEN BLAME THEM, NOT US!
Very disheartening to see more and more Dem politicians lean into anti trans positions and when trans people say "man, this sucks" they get swarmed by people yelling at them for handing elections to the GOP. Wish they had that energy for the politicians.

In Massachusetts, we have a responsibility to protect the vulnerable and stand up for those who need it. We don’t throw trans kids under the bus for political points. We protect them—and all of our neighbors—because trans rights are human rights.

It's whiny baby shit to act like Democrats deserve to win voters over with their strategic choices without alienating anyone.

Just say you believe the candidate's strategy will work, and you're comfortable with the tradeoffs. I won't blame you for it - I'll respect you for being honest.

You take a strategic position (assuming you don't have a deeply held belief in the area) because you think it help you with more voters than it hurts. You think votes you lose on Gaza will be made up for by the winning over Israel hard liners. Then you run the experiment and see if you were right.
