Librarian, history nerd, adoptee, probably practicing tatreez and lost in existential quandary (it’s okay, I like it here). Opinions are mine.
I’ve had a lot of conversations lately about the intersection of language, power, and intent, and this is an infuriatingly concise example of all three themes being tied together in the interest of inaction.
Latest on permitting reform discussions. The reply is the important part here. I do not understand how you can ever get to the point where you've resolved this with this administration. How do you plan to draw up legislation that will reign in an administration that has shown it ignores the law?

Every time IG gives me a prompt to summarize messages ***from my friends*** it radicalizes me a little bit more.

They don’t even want us having meaningful interactions with each other. It is legitimately crazy making.

Timely, as I’ve spent the morning thinking about the ever widening gap between what the majority of Americans consider literacy (word recognition) and actual literacy (word recognition, comprehension, creating meaning, drawing conclusions, extrapolating and applying the information as necessary).

As a librarian that teaches information literacy, I am also repelled by those prompts.

Also, can we talk about how much MORE work AI makes for people who don’t want to use it? Some of the AI-generated material to which I’m forced to respond feels straight up dystopian, & it’s a massive time suck.
As both an academic and a writer, I am repelled by the "this looks like a long document. Would you like me to summarize it for you?" that seems to appear at the top of every pdf viewer now.

NO. The *entire point* of good writing (either books or journal papers) is that every sentence has a purpose.

Following an incredibly hot, and deadly, summer in New York City and the country as a whole, we are releasing a new storymap on extreme heat that talks to New Yorkers about how these increasingly deadly heatwaves are affecting their lives.

The impacts of increasingly common extreme heat waves are worsened by climate change, poverty, and racism - but we can fight back

I managed the public library in College Station for years and am 0% surprised.

It’s the climate that many “locals” fought before the university really had to, only now it’s actually making the news because many academics have a platform to which unelected public servants rarely have access.
“Two courses for the fall of 2026 were canceled outright, while several more had to alter their syllabi to comply. Professors teaching those courses told The Chronicle they weren’t provided with any rationale for why their “exception requests” were partially or fully denied.”

Newly obtained records reveal that two courses for the fall were canceled outright, while administrators demanded changes to others. Instructors say the deliberative process is a black box.

I’m just imagining how many families could have been supported to remain intact with the money spent on this ad.

Adoption is a capitalistic enterprise. This isn’t about giving pregnant people options; it’s about the “domestic supply of infants” not currently meeting demand.
There’s a new adoption Super Bowl ad.

It’s not about helping pregnant people, it’s about shaping public opinion.

I wrote about why adoption is framed as a “choice” only when abortion is punished.

And here’s what a lot of folks aren’t ready to hear.

THIS is why the US is becoming a fascist state. There’s fascists in every country. But what allows them to take hold here is that we don’t have an opposition party.

If we don’t refuse to vote for these people anymore, this won’t end.

The biggest risk in this moment is something sociologists call “symbolic compliance.”

That’s when an institution that is violating civil rights gives the public just enough symbolic victories that accountability efforts lose steam before there has been any meaningful change.

I got my original birth certificate from Colorado in 2018 after years of being shut out by the agency that facilitated my adoption.

I don’t think many non-adopted people will ever be able to fully understand how surreal it is to see information **about yourself** that was hidden by the govt.
Virginia friends! Whether or not you’re adopted, please support the bill that gives VA adoptees access to their birth certificates. 👇

The right to identity and to see government records about us is fundamental.

My own life was saved by this knowledge (medical history). End adoption secrecy. 🥚
