"We'd all be speaking German". Maybe ask him why the Irish are speaking English nowadays.

Michel Barnier has said and done more stupid things since he left the EU. And ffs, why would we take a country that sees more freedom as negative, why would we take a country that also rejects two of our finest achievements, like Schengen which is good enough for 29 European nations?
October 3, 2026 at 11:31 AM
A nation that "thinks" to of the EU's finest achievements are somehow negatives that one "has to take" really isn't worth having for the EU. If you already reject our finest achievements, what's the point of the UK joining?

If you don't want Schengen and don't want the Euro: Just stay out please. No need for a half-in, half-out UK.

What negotiations? The aquis is the acquis. The UK decides if it wants to adopt it all or not and applies or doesn’t. The EU can decide on what the UK needs to do to qualify. And it’s not ‘less favourable’ to, e.g., join the euro or Schengen, it’s the point. If you don’t want it, don’t join the EU.

So do it on the same terms as other members.

The lost opt-outs are something to beat all Brexiters with until the day they die.

To be fair, Schengen, Freedom of Movement, the Euro, all brilliant things. Nothing to be afraid of.

The UK exceptionalists want to pick apart the very organization it wants to join. Farage does less damage to the EU with his position.

"So long as it reforms". 😂😂😂 Yeah, we are going to reform the European Union to appease a troublesome ex-member that never believed in European ideals (assuming it understood them, that is). 😂 Britain can't even reform itself, but it is arrogant enough to tell others to reform.

I tell you no one is going to "ditch Schengen". What gets on my nerves is that people in Britain talk about the imminent collapse of Schengen and the euro but there's not a peep in your media when countries join, like Bulgaria recently joined both. Can't have anything positive to say can we?
October 3, 2026 at 8:21 AM
The problem is also that the UK parliament voted on countless different Brexits and couldn't agree on any of them. If they had voted for - say - something akin to what Norway has it might. have happened. But they had no direction because there was never a serious discussion about it.

No one is going to ditch Schengen. It shows how detached from reality in mainland Europe people in the UK are if they think that. Good luck hiring thousands of border guards, setting up checks on every crossing, making cross-border life much harder, inflicting tremendous harm on the economy.

Brexit was simply a stupid idea and it would always be a negative. Only the degree to which it would be negative could be tweaked, but being outside the EU was always going to be worse than being inside.
October 3, 2026 at 8:14 AM
If Britain is unhappy with Schengen, it can stay right where it is. We need countries who like what we have achieved, not countries that look down upon it and wish to undermine what we have built. It takes courage to do what we did, those undermining it are cowards.
October 3, 2026 at 8:13 AM
"Escaping" huh? Spoken like only a Brit can speak. It has been ten years since the referendum and no one has even shown a plan to make Brexit work. Let me know when you can show us a plan that would have prevented the downsides of Brexit from happening lol
October 3, 2026 at 8:05 AM
You said Schengen is not popular. What you show me doesn't show it is not popular. Yeah, some cowards run after the far right like Merz. But still: when I drive into Germany, I just get off the motorway and enter Germany through a place where there's no checks. That's how "efficient" it all is
October 3, 2026 at 8:03 AM
Moi aussi. Schengen is one of the finest achievements of the EU, it's very popular and still it is seen as a "negative" in much of the UK. C'est incroyable.
October 3, 2026 at 7:37 AM
Well the far right are in power in Italy and they are still in Schengen. You haven't got a clue about how popular Schengen is. And Britain has shown that leaving parts of Schengen (the UK had access to Schengen databases) didn't exactly improve things, quite the contrary.
October 3, 2026 at 7:36 AM
This is such a typical warped British view. Joining Schengen would actually be more favourable than being outside, to name but one example. But as long as even the EU's finest achievements are seen as negatives there is no hope.

Schengen is so unpopular that Romania and Bulgaria recently joined it and Cyprus is working towards joining it in the next few years. That makes that it is good enough for 29 (soon 30) European nations, but beneath the dignity of the British. Please do stay far away.
October 3, 2026 at 6:59 AM
Total nonsense. Ask people in Europe who live near borders, in places like Belgium, the Netherlands or Austria whether they want to go back to the "good old days" of queues at the border. And there is no "no borders concept" as you get checked when you enter Schengen as you Brits are experiencing.
October 3, 2026 at 6:57 AM
A "Labour" government that vilifies immigrants and has the vile Shabana Mahmood in the Home Office lol. Keep those blinkers on. YOu have been a far-fight country for decades but you are too arrogant to see it as you lack all self-awareness about your own country. Awfully grateful you left.
October 3, 2026 at 6:17 AM
Every EU member state hugely benefits from membership but so many in Britain are too dumb to even begin to understand that. Hilarious you should be moaning about the far-right from the UK that has had far-right governments pushed by Farage for decades. Shabana Mahmood would make Le Pen blush.
October 3, 2026 at 5:52 AM
The awful EU lol. So awful that most of Europe is either in it, wants to be in or is closely integrated into it. Do enjoy your irrelevance on the fringes of your own continent as we will continue to shape it for you.
