Nothing useful to contribute, mainly just snarky comments from the sidelines.
But no Churchill?

Criminals are rarely pro-police.

Guy writes well. Should think of having a go at a book.

Couldn't agree more about apostrophe's.

Don't sugar-coat it!

There's long been a naive assumption that Trump must surely go along with the near universal disapproval of a large country launching an unprovoked attack on, and attempting to subjugate, a smaller neighbour. But Trump would see absolutely nothing wrong with this. Why wouldn't you do this?

This has been the case for some time, though, which makes Starmer's (or McSweeney's?) red lines all the more baffling. They can switch to a more popular policy while being able to blame the entire current shit show on the Tories. Politically that's surely a no-brainer?

I clearly remember Corbyn's stunning election victory of 2017, where he lost to an unpopular, stumbling incumbent by much less than expected. Labour's finest hour.

Isn't this just a set of books the people sharing the meme haven't read?

Cutting tiresome regulations should do the job. I understand there is a near-infinite amount of money to be saved there.

Superlative dramatisation.

Seems a strange time to be moving away from PR as their polling is getting worse. If tactical voting comes into play, as seems likely, with FPTP they could end up with at the most a few dozen seats from the figures they're currently polling.

Big savings on the police and courts if generally rolled out as an idea, though.

And Barack Obama's successful deal goes away.

Have you seen some kind of "director's cut" of the films, not for general release, where this is evident?

The US Right foster the myth that London is some kind of dangerous crime hell-hole, which they can sustain because their audience by and large doesn't go there. And the Right in this country get their ideas from the US. Kind of doesn't work so well when the audience is actual Londoners, though.

Also see Hitler vs Stalin. Yes, it's possible they're both bad guys.

Not sure about point 2: "Move towards the party that defeated you". The reason why voters picked Labour in 2024 was overwhelmingly because they had grown heartily sick of the Tories, rather than out of any especial appeal Labour had which they could emulate.

Of course, this may be simply because I was young then and now I'm old. But I do think things like climate change look like insurmountable challenges - there's no 'if we can just get by this'. 2/2

I remember all too clearly the palpable, and well-founded, fear of nuclear conflagration in the early 1980s. But it was something specific, a single thing we had to get past, against a still general sense of a world moving forward. I think a lot of that sense of progress, optimism, has now gone. 1/2

Well, it could be that his confidence is based on this, yes. But isn't it just as likely that it's based on a complete disconnect from reality? He is a fantasist and inveterate liar, and a while back, perhaps because of cognitive decline, he started believing his own lies.

Yes, but it's not a Bukowski quote.
