I actually quite like Kemi Badenoch. But she is subject to a myth she doesn't deserve: a Tory recovery which just doesn't exist. Despite endless positive coverage, the Tories are still going backwards. And they deserve to be.

Piece from me.

It seems like the police are assuming the far-right losers are 'looking for an excuse' to do more damage and so must be given maximum space.

In fact, they are turning a big dial that says 'thuggery' on it and constantly looking over at the state for the slightest sign of consequences.
No, arresting ‘Danny Tommo’ won’t make him a martyr. *Not* arresting him will fuel his agenda.

I think the problem is that hard right Tories who have moved to Reform think they are in an actual political party that should propose policies, rather than an authoritarian populist movement. Needed better onboarding.

I would love to ask a prominent BBC journalist to give me an example of an illegitimate concern. Is seems to me that it has become a question not of fact, logic, or ethics but of volume. If a big enough proportion of a village was anxious about Bigfoot or Chemtrails, BBC would cover it in a way...

A reminder of the enormous good one person can do
Sir Nicholas Winton was a British humanist who organised the rescue of more than 650 children, most of them Jewish, from Czechoslovakia, on the Kindertransport. In 1988, Winton featured on the BBC's 'That's Life!' programme, hosted by Esther Rantzen, unknowingly surrounded by the people he saved. 🧵

The fact that even 40% of Reform UK voters see Farage as sleazy is extraordinary.
YouGov: 77% of the public feel British governments are generally sleazy 73% of Britons describe Nigel Farage as sleazy, including 56% who think he is *very* sleazy.

40% of Reform UK voters see Farage as sleazy Belief Reform UK as a party is sleazy has increased by 18 points over the last two years.

First rate thread from an extremely astute German observer of Britain, who has a deep and thorough knowledge of this country but can also apply an outsider's perspective. We should take note of what she says, before it is too late.
There are, in my view, 25 things everyone needs to understand in light of recent events:

1) Those out in our communities last night were not protestors, but organised far right extremists.

2) Their actions align with fascist ideologies.

3) So yes: these are fascist practices on our streets.

This is, I think, a very good point. The effect is cumulative. That is why it was such a grotesque mistake for Labour to follow a policy of not rocking the boat after the disastrous Tory years. The boat very much needed to be rocked, and steered on to a clearly different course.
On 1 because he’s carrying the can for almost 20 years of even underperformance, unfair though that is. Hence each new PM plumbs new levels of unpopularity.
My top two mysteries of the moment in British Politics are:

1) Why does a PM as ineffectual & beige as Keir Starmer inspire quite so much genuine hatred?

2) Why are Tory MPs and members so happy with Kemi Badenoch when she hasn't even managed to pull the Party up to the depths it plumbed in 2024?
June 9, 2026 at 10:00 AM
This comes as no surprise. The level of vitriol directed against Starmer is out of all proportion to anything he has or has not done. It's vibes politics, which Labour have been very poor at grasping.
- On the doors I went to, there was no one with a good word to say about Keir Starmer (though many found it hard to articulate exactly why) - but also a hesitation from a lot of voters about Farage. Often it felt like Lowe had stolen the anti establishment credentials of Farage.

Privatised water is such an obvious scam that it's achieved the impossible: getting 82% of Brits to agree on something.

The only issue to score higher was the public’s desire for Tony Blair to stick to retirement.

This however, paid collusion between the leaders of two political parties in the run up to election, if true, is a scandal of staggering propositions

I would argue that the primary reason for the attack on Iran was that Trump got such a buzz out of the Venezuela affair that he has been itching for more of the same. As insane and appalling as it is, this is a more plausible explanation than anything which assumes rational consideration.
This was clear from the jump, but the Venezuela invasion going as smoothly as it did, from a pure operational perspective, is going to prove catastrophic in the long run.
