Light, dark and ’night’. Dashboard type apps, like real time marine conditions on boats, need an even dimmer view to be used in darkness. Often these are just red on black. This starts approaching accessibility territory, where there are sometimes requirements for monochromatic presentations.

The original icon was perhaps something like this one from 1988, but this is high-res from packaging. Excel 1.0 was Mac-only, so it would have been 32px black-and-white in 1985
