Well this prompted a(nother) letter to my MP and spurred me into getting more active to support local asylum and refugee charities.

I am writing to you regarding a Facebook post which you made recently on the subject of proposed asylum accommodation in Farnham Royal. I have lived in this constituency since 1975 and I write to you as a resident, a voter, and as your constituent whom you were elected to represent.
With this letter, I want to make it absolutely crystal clear to you that I firmly support and actively welcome asylum seekers as my neighbours. I know that I am not alone. Your constituents will not stand by while you use us as a shield for your anti-asylum rhetoric. Refugees and asylum seekers are welcome in our neighbourhood. You wrote: “I will fight tooth and nail against any asylum accommodation being placed in this location in Farnham Royal, or indeed any other part of my constituency.” I will fight tooth and nail against your xenophobic rhetoric and policies and to assure a warm welcome to those in need who seek a refuge in this constituency. Prompted by your comment, I have made a substantial donation to Marlow Refugee Action and I look forward to actively contributing my time and money to other local charities supporting asylum seekers and refugees in the Beaconsfield constituency.
You are an immigrant to this country yourself, and a recent arrival to this constituency. Given this, your choice of language is all the more surprising. Just last week, your leader backed senior Conservative shadow ministers when they called the UK a “Christian country”. You yourself were educated in a Christian school, so you won’t need to be reminded of Leviticus 19:34 , Psalm 82:3 , Matthew 25:35 , Hebrews 13:2 . I find it hard to imagine a more unchristian act than to turn away those in dire need of protection. Jesus was Himself an asylum seeker. I urge you to search your own conscience. We need our politicians from all parties to take a stand against hatred and division; instead, we see you fanning the flames.
