Margate Harbour Arm on a sunny day: Lightly rippling dark blue estuary waters, peppered with numerous bathing seagulls, form the bottom third of the image. From right to mid left, almost making a horizon, is a stone harbour wall with small colourful boats in front and a series of brightly coloured sheds on top of the wall. At the left end of the harbour wall rises a slender lighthouse. The sky beyond & above is various shades of blue. Words Change Things Festival chalkboard: A wooden a-framed chalkboard forms the bulk of the image. It is set on a largely tarmaced pavement with weeds growing at the non-roadside kerb. Encouraging to see this at @nationaltrust.org.uk #Sissinghurst yesterday - not a million miles from our #hugelkultur beds at @thebaytrust.bsky.social #PinesGarden. Tomorrow I’m meeting local NT staff on ways we can help each other further - and their 2035 Strategy sets a very positive context :-)

Whilst I did consider rhododendrons at @nationaltrust.org.uk #ScotneyCastle or daisies at #GreatDixter, here are Margate sands one May morning - I was off to meet @danthompson33.bsky.social nearby. #LentoAdvent day 16.
Margate sands and Harbour Arm. Light brown (sand coloured!) beach fills the bottom 40%of the photo, whilst an almost clear blue sky dominates the rest. The horizon line is just below the centre and features a low stone harbour wall reaching out from buildings (and a promenade) on the right. The harbour wall has, dotted along it, a series of low-rise structures (some are shed-like) that appear yellow, brown and black in the image. Just before the end of the wall, almost at the centre of the picture is a thin, taller, upright structure - a lighthouse.)

How about The Poustinia, at #ThePinesGarden, in Kent as a building with a good sound? I attempted a field recording in it earlier this year; nearby sea, breezes through trees and birdsong all seemed focussed in there :-) More info in ALT text. #LentoAdvent day 13.
The Poustinia, at The Pines Garden, St. Margaret’s Bay, Kent. Formed of circular rammed chalk walls (mostly white in this photo), maybe around 3 metres high, with a rectangular entrance/exit at the front. A brown/grey wooden fascia edges a grass domed roof (built using a Catalan vaulting method) above the walls. The structure sits on a raised stone and grass platform, with two wide stone steps leading up to it. Behind are tall leafless trees (this is a winter image) on a high bank, set against a pale blue sky, with green leafed bushes and a pine tree lower / closer to the rear of the Poustinia.

A section of river I had not previously visited is my first contribution to #LentoAdvent this year. Here’s a bit of Richmond Falls, on the River Swale, whilst walking towards the start of the Easby Loop in mid September.
Part of Richmond Falls, North Yorkshire. River waters flow right to left, a mix of brown, dark grey and pale-to-white froth moving over a short drop of both smooth and almost cubic limestone rocks. The drop appears to be more than a metre but less than two. The tops of many rocks are dry and above the water level. Behind is a tree lined bank (thick with green leaves) and, to the top left, clear blue sky.

Part of the front sleeve of Cocteau Twins’ album ‘Heaven or Las Vegas.’ The image features a largely pink/red background in the lower 60% of the image with a blue above this. Arcing across those backgrounds are a series of illuminated lights, akin to firework trails, in various hues of yellow, gold, pink, purple and white.

Possibly my first suggestion for a @richards7370.bsky.social poll (though I’ve voted on some past ones)… for #5DebutAlbums1014 here is ‘Total Strife Forever’ by East India Youth. Under his real name, William Doyle, he went on to make a record with #JonathanMeades.

Quite an ornate one for #FingerpostFriday this week. Outside @brunelmuseum.bsky.social in Rotherhithe, London.
A finger post outside the Brunel Museum, Rotherhithe, London. The post is made of metal, featuring a ribbed appearance (with those ribs running in straight lines from the ground upwards) and ornate top section at the top (involving a rim at right angles to the ribs and then, after a few centimetres more, a cap with a parabolic curve all the way around.) The post is painted black and has three “fingers” pointing in differing directions - these are painted white and, from left to right in the image, state Rotherhithe Station, Thames Path (with an acorn motif to the left of this) and Thames Path (with no acorn motif.) In the background are tall trees, with green leaves, shrubs and a pale brown-bricked building (only parts of which are visible.) The building has a black door, open, with some posters attached (these are too small to read) and the left of the image shows a short section of a wooden wall, below some flowering foliage, painted in black, grey and various blue stripes.

Good PM at @asbpuk.bsky.social Reuse Summit. One highlight was the phrase “possibilism is your friend” from Will Arnold of @istructe.bsky.social as it brought to my mind ideas for celebrating @thebaytrust.bsky.social #PinesCalyx (itself made of reused materials) 21st anniversary in 2027!

#FingerpostFriday. Quite a new looking sign at the junction of two lanes - seen a couple of weeks ago, just north of Grasmere. Features a Wainwright insignia too.
Wooden fingerpost sign, in a rich mid-brown (partly thanks to rain), upright but leaning slightly towards the right edge of the photo. The “pointing” part of the sign contains an icon showing an acorn and the text “Coast to Coast Path” on one line with “Grisedale Tarn 2 1/2 miles” underneath. There is also a pointing part angled towards the camera, but its content is not legible. At the top of the central pillar of wood is inscribed an “aw” insignia, representing Alf Wainwright. The background features a field of green grass, wood post & wire fence and woodland. A fell is visible, though partially shrouded in fine mist, in the distance.

Away (1): En route to @samreadbookseller.bsky.social this week(I did buy a book there!) I came across this, on a table at #TheYan. Had the joy of working with Geoff some years ago, albeit not on an #Herdwick agenda. A nice reminder. RIP.

Yurt shadows at the @thebaytrust.bsky.social #PinesGarden today. On Saturday morning this (and much else) was covered with chalk-infused mud from a flash-flood. I only aided with some shovel & wheelbarrow work that day; colleagues then & since have done a grand clean-up, so we can reopen tomorrow.
Sun-lit paved area (brick / cobble-shaped stones, a range of greys, reds & browns in colour, and dark-brown pointing) onto which has been thrown thin shadows from wooden roof-struts, radiating from a circular “hub” (also made of wood) - all part of a structure called ‘The Yurt’ which, at the time, was without its fabric covering. To the bottom right of the image are more closely lined thin shadows, cast by a repurposed pub garden bench. Some tree shadows are also visible in the centre lower left of the image.

The #hugelkultur bed, treated with “no kit” #biochar by colleagues at @thebaytrust.bsky.social last month, today. The structure that looks like a squat #pylon (without any wires!) is actually an old wooden rose obelisk being put to new use :-)

It is now #NoMowMay and so here is a #ThrowbackThursday of a photo I took at #ThePinesGarden of @thebaytrust.bsky.social during last year’s. There’s also a bit of a #hugelkultur bed in view! I will endeavour to post a 2025 image or two in the coming weeks :-) @plantlifeuk.bsky.social
The top third of the image features a blue sky with some light cloud cover. Below this is a band of various trees and, to the mid-left, a headland that comes to an abrupt end with a chalk cliff facing to the right (the sea is out of shot.) Almost all of the lower half of the picture shows unmown grassland, interwoven in places with (mainly yellow) wildflowers, and a swathe of leafier plants (nearly all green) sprouting out from a hugelkultur bed (which also includes a little bare earth) dominating on the left. The roofing of a few buildings can be seen in a few random areas of the picture.

Under the yurt timbers, at @thebaytrust.bsky.social #PinesGarden yesterday afternoon. It’s been a week including some focus on setting up courses & workshops that the Trust will be announcing in April…
Dark, thin, wooden struts fan out, at a shallow descending angle, from a circle made of the same wood. To the right those struts connect to a larger diameter wooden circle. These timbers are covered by material in summer months so as to form a tented roof. The timbers are currently uncovered. Between the timbers is seen a pale blue sky with some feint cloud on the right of the image and tops of some trees. There is a halo effect around the sun, which is concealed by the top of a tree which rises towards the wooden circle mentioned previously.

In between completing some grant claims and planning for our next #generationrestoration project at @thebaytrust.bsky.social, I took a photo of some old bottles embedded in one of the #PinesGarden walls this afternoon. A little space :-)
Image shows four bands of pale recycled bricks (part of a wall) in a slightly wavy line, running from left to right (or vice-versa); between each layer, embedded in the mortar, are the bases of old glass bottles. The top layer of bottle bases are brown, mid are clear and the bottom set are all green. All three glass bottle layers are informally wavy too.

Finally participating in #LentoAdvent - and there’s a #Top31DepecheMode connection to this one. The image is of cherry blossom on a tree in a street called Gobions, in Basildon, back in April. This road leads to an entrance of Woodlands School (quite key in the group’s history!)

A bridge pilgrimage. At @brunelsbridge.bsky.social yesterday, briefly experiencing its public-facing interpretation (with lessons for #ThePinesCalyx back at #TheBayTrust); had been with Bristol Uni’s very helpful Theatre Collection before, re TBT’s museum modernisation. I will be returning :-)

Wood shadows, thrown by the afternoon sun, across #ThePinesGarden today. We’ve had a bushcraft workshop, as part of the Dover Youth Festival, and a Halloween-themed eco-crafts class here this week. Also, work on our new apartment now has a start date :-) #TheBayTrust

Here’s a shot from this afternoon at work. There was a chap strumming a not-plugged in electric guitar on the other side of the hugelkultur bed containing the sunflowers. Then a visitor offered their spare squashes for the soup served in the tea room we have on site (alongside those grown here)! :-)

And a fine oasis it is. Took a @radiolento.bsky.social inspired breather yesterday - these shots taken between work on our amphitheatre, some Noel Coward memorabilia and in signing a #Geopark grant agreement! Views of prep for a new meadow & out from our #poustinia towards the Channel/La Manche.
