I realize that apparently a lot of folks cannot distinguish between what is 'natural' (smallpox, for instance, all natural) and what is 'good' but this is pretty clearly an ideological configuration that recurs in a wide range of cultures and political circumstances.

It’s worse than this. Having been in the room with many of them (long ago, before I knew they were psychopaths), the tycoons who are left running the industry have an active contempt for ordinary people, including their own workers. They actively want to oppress, control and punish them.
Tech execs do not have, like, a theory of mind for people who aren’t tech execs. If they did, they wouldn’t be so frequently baffled by how repulsive normal people think their whole deal is right now

The fall in violent crime is too big to be explained by any single cause, but I've always thought that immigration from cultures where drinking eight pints and getting into a fight isn't seen as a normal way to spend your Saturday night must be a non-trivial part of it.
