An especially impactful piece for me today. Grief finds me most often driving in the car since that is what my sister and I did together.
"...I learned to take my hands off the grief steering wheel, and to know that it could hit me anytime, anywhere, and would. Grief is out of our control."

From "Seven Days in August," new culture nonfiction by Elissa Altman.

Love this story by Kate Beall as a buggy summer comes to a close.
“Holding a peach was like being able to bend time and hold your own newborn head, furred and dense and pulsing”

A strange & gorgeous story new on hex today—don’t miss “The Summer of Yield and Spoils” by Kate Beall

The Summer of Yield and Spoils by Kate Beall
The fruit flies started in the kitchen. They started on the tomatoes. We picked the fruit pink in a race against the raccoons, piling them on the counter. We wanted to wait: we wanted to eat them only...

My CNF flash piece on the loss of my sister is featured on JMWW today. I hope these words resonate and can raise awareness about DV.

In my dream, you’re still merely missing, your body not yet recovered, and an etching of hope remains that I will find you.

What are you doing with your Canvas-free, ransom day? I cleaned out my son’s closet and donated his too-small clothes.

I received my sister’s autopsy report yesterday. My sister’s autopsy… She endured more abuse and violence than I realized. Devastated I couldn’t save her. Earlier this week, we selected the winner of her memorial scholarship: $3k to an aspiring nurse. Be the light in darkness.

I was holding this peep close when she hopped up on my shoulder. (Doesn’t the red glow from the heat lamp look like some portal to hell ripped open my spare bedroom? There’s a story right there.)

My sister’s memorial scholarship application is live! Open to HS seniors in Chesapeake, VA who are future nurses! Applicants will compose an essay on domestic abuse. Chelse was a DV victim. She died by gunshot wound in the middle of her forehead on 11/2/25.

When you’re mourning, everyone looks at you like you’re a reptile person. I don’t know how to be anything else. I would really like to go be a reptile in a secluded cabin. Or maybe a salamander.
