Does gender and sex mean anything before the universe even had gender?

That's the question we are asking in this week's episode: Phanes the Agender!

Here's Phanes from the relief at Modena, Italy, and a 1914 engraving.

Phanes was the very first deity, who existed before gender was a concept, so Phanes manifests all possibilities of gender at the same time, without actually being any one of them.
Simply put sex and gender are not meaningful concepts when talking about Phanes.
See you Monday!

Meet Phanes, the first deity whose manifestations are not visibly identified with any gender.
This is from a 2nd century relief from Modena, Italy.
Note the recurrent threes a bull, ram, and lion poke out of their chest, and across their body are horns, wings, and a serpent!

Iakkhos and Mise are the same deity. They fluctuate between masculine and feminine appearances so they can lead the initiates in the Eleusinian and Bacchic Mysteries.
By moving between genders, they could instruct and guide the mystics in rituals!

This week we are talking about Iakkhos and Mise as manifestations of Gender Fluidity.

They were the same deity who led Eleusinian and Bacchic processions and guided souls to the underworld. This is the Ninnion Tablet showing Eleusinian Initiation in Athens!

One of the things which was so interesting about Enyo, is how the Greeks placed aromantic expressions as old and fundamental to sexuality as erotic love or asexuality.
Enyo is a child of Zeus and Hera, that is to say aromanticism is older than humanity itself!

This week we are discussing Enyo, Conflict embodied, as a manifestation of Aromantic identity. Enyo was not chaste, having a child Enyalios with Ares and a close connection to Eris.

However Enyo was never romantically tied to anybody.

See you Monday!

Erotic love is almost as old as the Cosmos itself.
Asexuality emerged a short time later in the figure of Hestia.
Hestia is the best example of early Asexuality we get in Antiquity.
Asexuality is as quintessential to the human experience as Erotic love!

The Romans held asexual Hestia (Latin Vesta) in extremely high regard. The famous Vestal Virgins maintained the Temple to Vesta at Rome.
Though these chaste women existed outside sexual expectations, they were absolutely revered by Roman patriarchy.

Our next episode discusses the asexual aspects of Hestia, the Hearth Goddess.
Hestia was both the first born Olympian, and the first swallowed by Kronos, then the last Olympian expelled from Kronos' gut by Zeus! She keeps the hearth of Olympus!

This week we are discussing Dionysos as a demisexual. Dionysos does not often show overt sexuality, rather sexuality is a rare occurrence that is generally eternal.
This dynamic is important to understanding both mythology and human ritual environment.

See you tomorrow!

This week we are focusing on Zeus whose sexual desires could best be described as pansexual. Zeus is the King of the Universe, and with that power comes a great amount of sexual experimentation with body and form. Each story reflects a deep loving romance.

The essence of being a non-binary Hero:
Following one’s own desires, duty to protect one’s family, striving for excellence in whatever one does, ignoring gender binaries to seek a fulfilled life, and bring others up while you are doing it. Athena represents a non-binary role model!

This week's episode covers the story of the Agdistis. They were created through an immaculate conception with an intersex condition, resulting in the manifestation of male and female sexual characteristics. The other Gods were terrified by Agdistis, so they publicly exposed and castrated them.
