🤩 Fantastic to see the latest issue of @timeforkids.bsky.social out in classrooms. I got to write a wee story about the rescue mission to boost the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory. It was a super interesting story to tell! 🔭

✅ #Artemis II update: the spacecraft entered the lunar sphere of influence this morning at 05:37 BST/06:37 CEST, 6 April, at about 51 000 km from the Moon (the region of space where the Moon’s gravitational pull is stronger than that of Earth’s).

Before going to sleep on flight day 5, the Artemis II crew snapped one more photo of the Moon, as it drew close in the window of the Orion spacecraft. Orion and the four humans aboard entered the lunar sphere of influence at 06:37 CEST on 6 April, at the tail end of the fifth day of their mission. That marked the point at which the Moon's gravity had a stronger pull on the spacecraft than Earth's. Artemis II's closest approach to the Moon will come on flight day 6, as they swing around the far side before beginning their journey back to Earth.

Webb observations have also revealed the identity of the fuzzy object at the tip of this object also known as Herbig-Haro 49/50.

Angled from the upper left corner to the lower right corner of the image is a conical shaped orange-red cloud known at Herbig-Haro 49/50. This feature takes up about three-fourths of the length of this angle. The upper left end of this feature has a translucent, rounded end. At this same location there is a background spiral shaped galaxy with a concentrated blue center that fades outwards to blend in with red spiral arms. The conical feature widens slightly from the rounded end at the upper right down to the lower right. The black background of space is clearer, speckled with some white stars and smaller, more numerous, fainter white galaxies.

Wide view of Jupiter's mid latitudes, with a few belts and zones (dark and light bands) visible. Some turbulent flow is seen both within and in between these bands. The image was taken in January 2025, during Juno's perijove #69.

It’s been forever since I processed #JunoCam images. Still super tricky! 😅 But here’s the Folded Filamentary Region taken during Perijove 69 on 28th Jan 2025. The #Juno spacecraft was 17,541.5 km above #Jupiter at the time.
