In this black and white photograph, a young girl sits in a kitchen staring directly at the camera as late afternoon sunshine streams through a window. Half her face is hidden by deep shadows, which focuses on one captivating eye that engages the viewer with its intensity. The harsh lighting creates a mysterious atmosphere. Split lighting is a photography lighting technique that lights the subject from the side to achieve a dramatic look for portraits where half of the subject’s face is lit and the other half is in shadow. A split light pattern is perfect for dramatic, dark and moody portraits. Since you can see only half the face, it creates a sense of mystery, of something hidden, even a little intimidating.

I took this photograph of an historic steam locomotive getting ready to embark at Strasburg Rail Road. The photograph is taken looking at the front of the train as the train tracks recede into the distance. This creates a three dimensional perspective for the viewer. The Strasburg Rail Road traverses a storied 9-mile round trip through 2,500 acres of the picturesque Lancaster County Amish countryside, powered by the raw strength of a historic steam locomotive.

Perhaps one of the most delightful insect visitors to your garden is the hummingbird moth. They fly and move just like hummingbirds. Like them, they can remain suspended in the air in front of a flower while they unfurl their long tongues and insert them in flowers to sip their nectar. They even emit an audible hum like hummingbirds.
