A lot of people keep talking about how he violated his oath. They might try to remember that his oath includes the promise to defend the Constitution and the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic.

He definitely knew what he was getting into before doing it. Man had 17 years in the Navy, and was a major - he'd have been very familiar with the UCMJ. Torching his career in spectacular fashion like he did makes it an incredibly brave and moral stand. Him being military is what makes this news.
