@bookscraiccake.bsky.social Here are some examples which I hope will encourage you to look - once seen they cannot be unseen. All these are from the north of Scotland.

I have a favour to ask. When looking at headstones keep an eye open for painted decoration. Once you start noticing them they are everywhere.

Spinningdale Mill, Sutherland. Tippy toes surveying this. Shows how extensive lime finishes were and applied to industrial buildings as well as domestic. LFG Open Mic night on the 6th Oct. @limefinishesgroup1.bsky.social Joining the LFG is easy and free.

Cromarty on Wednesday; we harled this in 1999 & the owners have kept on top of maintenance, espc the Crowsteps. We looked at the archaeology of harl, thickness, detailing and galetting,& how it folded over the details. Nothing fancy or imaginative, just looking at precedent. Seamless architecture.

I picked up this worn plastered concrete block from the beach at Balivanich, Benbecula. Considering taking it back and throwing it back in for the next beachcomber.

Scalpay lighthouse has everything, Harl as you go, lined out and painted pointing, and multiple layers of limewash.

Kick-ass painted monument in Nairn. This must have been astonishing when new. Each passing, another coat. So much for black Victorian mourning? The burial ground is full of them. Who would have guessed. Do share yours when you find them and FTR you will when you start to look.
