Inch House, Edinburgh, doors open today. My first visit. Early 17th-century replacement spiral stairs with slightly later and super rare carved oak double doorcases at landings

Cromarty on Wednesday; we harled this in 1999 & the owners have kept on top of maintenance, espc the Crowsteps. We looked at the archaeology of harl, thickness, detailing and galetting,& how it folded over the details. Nothing fancy or imaginative, just looking at precedent. Seamless architecture.

In most countries around the world, individual action is the only option left.
You can really only take that away from yourself.
This year has been brutal, and like most people you probably want to do more about climate change. But what, and how?

Great news – I’ve written just the book for you!

It’s called What One Person Can Do and it’s a clear and simple how-to guide, a roadmap to help you make influential changes...

Stonebreakers Roscrea Co. Tipperary photographed by Fox Talbot 1853. Stone breaking was a highly protected trade due to ongoing contracts so interlopers wouldn’t be getting hugs. Sometimes you still find what were called “Blue Bastards” that were lobbed over hedges. These were impossible to break.

🧵This 1873 engraving of Bradford from Cliff(e) Quarry captures perfectly the raw scale, environmental impact, and economic landscape of the industrial revolution in the West Riding. Sprawling, multi-story textile mills dominate the valley whilst dozens of chimneys choke the sky with dense smog.

I picked up this worn plastered concrete block from the beach at Balivanich, Benbecula. Considering taking it back and throwing it back in for the next beachcomber.

Kick-ass painted monument in Nairn. This must have been astonishing when new. Each passing, another coat. So much for black Victorian mourning? The burial ground is full of them. Who would have guessed. Do share yours when you find them and FTR you will when you start to look.
