an odd moment was the president posting an image wearing one glove and posing with xi, a photoshopped blonde woman, and a row of droids

the president running an overtly political campaign ad paid for by the us government is a sign of blatant corruption and disregard for the rule of law
What an odd moment in United States history.

A U.S. president is running an overtly political camaign advertisement, right before midterm elections, paid for by the U.S. government.

Trump appears to believe he is immune from any kind of legal limit.

A Trump 2024 Campaign Ad Returns, Now Brought to You by the Government (Gift Article)
The ad, which ethics experts said could violate federal law, shows Mr. Trump vowing to “expel the warmongers” from the government and fight the “deep state,” even as he wages a war with Iran.

a Sunday reminder for Washingtonians out there

Washington is the only state where a MAJORITY of the state Supreme Court is on the ballot, all at once

a very rare situation

no party label on the ballot but candidates are still aligned with parties! important to learn: boltsmag.org/your-state-b...

Should America spend YOUR taxpayer dollars on foreign wars no one supports or child care here at home?

That's exactly what I asked folks in Port Townsend, and the answer was unanimous.

Fund child care NOT war.

Libraries make us a harder target for authoritarianism. Equal access to info, ideas, and space that doesn’t require a purchase to belong.
Also: using the library means money stays in your community instead of streaming out to Amazon. 📚

That’s a wrap on our Pacific Northwest Textile Circularity Symposium! 🧵 This past May, our Recycling Market Development team gathered several sustainability specialists from across the state to discuss some of the fastest-growing material-types in our waste stream: clothes and fabrics.

BREAKING: the House just passed my bill to make Daylight Saving Time permanent!

Leader Thune should bring this bill to a vote in the Senate so we can finally get this done.

More sunshine. Less depression. Let's finally lock the clock!

Your friendly reminder that the USWNT has won FOUR World Cups.

And they had to go to the Supreme Court to get paid.

“The formula for democracy is a thing of multiple parts. At its core is nothing solid, just a framework, on which pieces brought across oceans can be conjoined. From many, one.”

Fascinating interactive exploration of the powerful metaphor of the creation of the Statue of Liberty (I learned a lot):
The Most Iconic American Artwork Is the Hardest to See (Gift Article)
The Statue of Liberty is caught between the sublime and the souvenir, our critic Jason Farago explains. Look again: She’s much stranger than you think.

I wrote about what it means to be American from the perspective of someone whose family was here before America was.
I also figured out that a sixth of immigrants have been in the U.S. longer than JD "being American is about having roots here" Vance.

My family has been here since 1621. That is not what makes me American.
Let's look at ancestry, immigration, Revolutionary War service and July 4 as the United States marks its 250th birthday.

I'm attending a digital humanities event in Montreal. There was a keynote on AI and something about the talk made me wonder if it had been written by Claude. I said as much in the Q&A. As I posed the question, the speaker shifted, looking slightly uncomfortable. What he said next shocked the room +

A PhD student at Stanford noticed her classmates were asking Al to write their breakup texts.

So she ran a study. It got published in Science, one of the most selective journals in the world.

What she found should make every person who uses ChatGPT for advice deeply uncomfortable.

Remarkable: With support for the Iran war tanking, Trump is now throwing away the GOP's advantage on three core issues: Economy, immigration, national security.

A year ago it looked like he might be popular on all three. He lit it all on fire. 1/

Donald Trump’s Presidency Is in Free Fall
Republicans typically lead on the economy, national security, and immigration. Trump is squandering the GOP’s traditional strength on all three.

OFFS. When Iran tried to interefere in 2020, researchers caught them and called them out. Then the Benz-Weiss-Taibbi-Musk-Jordan-Trump axis labeled those researchers "censors" ... and set about defunding them and dismantling their organizations.
I am going to need every single person who said that misinformation was a moral panic to feel enough shame and regret that they leave public intellectual life.
