Brooke Rollins made an appearance at World Dairy Expo yesterday. I refused to attend her talk on principle, but I'm told the room was full when she started and nearly empty when she finished. If the regime is losing dairy farmer support, well, that doesn't bode well for Rs in November.

I truly, deeply, sincerely do think the guy flipping burgers at McDonalds should be able to afford rent, bills, and groceries with his paycheck alone. That's kind of the whole point of having a job and I can't believe this is considered a radical position.🤷🏽‍♀️

Why can't the replicator use a combination of his voiceprint and comm badge proximity to figure out it's the Captain asking and give him tea, Earl Grey, hot, by default?
That Picard has to specify the temperature each time probably means that Earl Grey is popular onboard, but at different heat levels, and the ship's systems no longer has a default mode for that beverage.

So much this. I find it very difficult to get my phone to play the correct podcast by talking to it, much less anything important.
Entire generation of tech nerds never realized that talking to the computer on star trek was a narrative device and it is very rare that anyone wants to so this except necessary hands free situations

If they stop making Salted Nut Rolls I'm likely to be driven to intemperate behavior.
Salted Nut Rolls are delicious but also have an interesting story to tell, and same goes for lots of other Minnesota snacks.

A pleasure to contribute some thoughts and history to this excellent piece by @stribrooks.bsky.social

This is a bad bill that will benefit the NCAA and the conferences, but won't fix the transfer portal, which is the real problem. As an LSU alumnus, I wish the schools would do something about the rape and all, too, but I guess Athletic Directors don't get paid for protecting people from athletes.
The transfer portal is the bigger issue than athlete pay. Schools like TCU and Texas A&M get hit hard by it.

“Huh. That’s weird.” is the essence of being a scientist. When did that become a surprise to people?
"For a long time, I thought becoming a scientist meant learning how to appear certain, composed, and knowledgeable. But the people I came to admire have held on to their willingness to ask questions and to be excited by what they did not yet know." #ScienceWorkingLife https://scim.ag/4rsIztb

"Choosin' Texas" is a perfectly cromulent song and the dance is fun. There doesn't need to be a Discourse about it. I have a bad memory and often get the title wrong (it's not "Leavin' Texas"?) and I have no idea what the singer's name is. She sounds just a hair Lucinda, sometimes, which I like.

I refuse to address the New York Times list of best TV shows of the 21st century on the grounds that they're going to be haunted by Bourdain, anyway, and I can't write anything worse than that.

There are no penalties too harsh for these folks. I hope their luggage ends up in Cleveland and they're in Miami. I hope their favorite snack runs out just before the cart reaches them, I hope the person in the seat in front of them reclines, all the way back. Foul spirits.
at an airport rn and it's absolutely startling how many people are playing videos on their phones or taking calls on speaker phone, all sans headphones. all of these people should be severely reprimanded!

We're Costco members but aren't really Costco People. I kind of hate going there because the other customers are awful and the cashiers get mad if you don't want to BOGO the cream cheese Danishes. I rolled by this evening to get a couple of pizzas, and I pity every worker in the food court, what a.

If I was a grown person who didn't know his own address, I probably wouldn't admit it. What are we even doing here? That's not admirable, or evidence of mental dexterity, or systems thinking, or whatever. In fact, I don't even believe him.
I regret to inform you that Ezra Douthglesias is at it again
Ezra Klein asked Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang about AI making kids worse at math and reading. Huang’s reply: “Does it matter?”

Then he said he doesn’t know his own address or phone number. “We’re going to lose some fine intellectual dexterity.” www.nytimes.com/2026/09/23/o...

There are so many gaps in my knowledge of music, but why was "Bitches Brew" so controversial in the jazz world? Hadn't Ornette Coleman already burned everything down with "Free Jazz"?

I am so grateful to this post because I'd not yet heard that. It's fantastic. God bless our aviation-shanty overlords. Also, go see the sea shanty-based retelling of Mary Ann Brown Patten's story, "Steady She Goes", by Erica Berman, it's fantastic.

@bsky.app, what the heck? Why am I getting "Invalid handle" messages on my profile, and "Failed to verify handle. Please try again." when I try and re-validate my domain? The file's there. The contents are correct. This had been working for, I don't know, a year or more?

Imagine the poor staffer who had to explain furries to the dumbest member of Congress. Or don't, they work for him voluntarily.
Tommy Tuberville: Many airline pilots, flight attendants, and air traffic controllers are part of the furry community. It's terrifying.

I'm generally calmer as I age, but the absolute trash that is the "styling" system in Microsoft PowerPoint does terrible things to my blood pressure. "Slide Master" my foot. I'm about 30 seconds away from becoming a Beamer person, I swear, then at least formatting would work properly.

Utter trash. California deserves better. As if we're not already years into learning (yet again) why imperial presidents/governors/potentates are Bad, Actually.
Dude thinks he's appealing to "moderates" (really just a handful of right-wing podcasters) and can't stop printing out receipts that say "Gavin ain't got that dog in him." His veto may as well have been sent from another planet where Republicans don't instantly breach every supposed norm.
