Magyar, was once written on old stamps from Hungry, which I know from my childhood stamp collection
I think it’s pretty cool that the guy who’s about to destroy Orban is named Magyar. “Magyar” is the name used to describe the dominant indigenous ethnic group in Hungary… which is the majority of the population. So, Magyar will be the representative of the people of Hungary, in both name and title.

I know it’s irresponsible but I’m quite looking forwards to seeing how this blockade is going to happen, not to mention the indicting of ships who pay Iran. Surreal.

X channelled me by algorithm down a tedious, repetitive, nationalistic UK narrow channel when what I’m interested in is tracking global issues and politics, then seeing how they affect Britain too. The context I want is a wider world.

Yeah, let’s go to war with China. Let’s open fire on their tankers. Have we seriously thought this one through??
Ron Johnson: "It's not easy. And it could be longer-term ... we certainly have the capability of blocking oil from the Strait of Hormuz from going to China as well. We have plenty of power in this situation and we need to use it."

‘An interdict is an authoritative prohibition, ban, or restriction, often used in legal, religious, or military contexts to stop a specific action or cut off supplies.a formal, often forceful, order to prevent an action, such as….a military force halting an enemy.’

The maritime northern trade route relies on the Danish straits for access to the North Sea, is another potential choke point for trade. They’re the only maritime exit for Russia’s Baltic ports, Finland, Sweden and the Baltic states. Hormuz risks becoming a straits precedent.

Oh, yeah, that was the Obama Iran deal.
April 12, 2026 at 2:26 AM
A deal negotiated after two years, with much resistance in Iran, by Obama. Trump has made it his legacy mission to destroy everything Obama did. Character as policy.
Your regular reminder that the US had a pain-stakingly negotiated and workable deal with Iran when Trump came to power, but he tore it up. He's now desperately trying to secure a deal much worse than the one he set aside.
Marathon talks? Compared to what? It took years for Obama to deliver a detailed Iran deal. The Trump admin are packing it in after 20 hours.

Singapore, Malaysia, China, Asia, can’t have neighbouring Indonesia grabbing the 2 mile wide Malacca Straits through which more oil flows than Hormuz. The Iranian discussions in Islamabad have massive wider implications.

Just got 5 paras of You’re Right contrition from ChatGBT. When sourcing a factual matrix it had missed reports by @FT and similar, over relying on Reuters and AP. Meant its conclusions were wrong. I pushed back. It resisted. Sent it the FT article. It caved. Don’t stop doing the work.

Guardian says "marathon" peace talks, but without quotes for a mere twenty-hour session.

The talks which led to the Good Friday Agreement took nearly two years, with a longer process of engagement before then.

I too wanted regime change in Iran but I didn’t have the expertise of the whole American administration available to me. And it wasn’t because of oil and control of the Gulf states post Venezuela either.

China receives 37.7% of all oil exports that pass through the Strait of Hormuz, the most of any country. China is the world’s largest manufacturing nation
Asian countries are most affected by a closure of the strait, receiving 89.2% of the Strait’s crude oil and condensate flows

Oman. Look at Oman.Iran has not ratified the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) guaranteeing the right to transit passage, however, which complicates legal matters. Oman, in whose waters, the Hormuz shipping passed before the war, has,so it is obliged to allow toll free passage

Two observations on the statement by Melania Trump, which are in tension with each other.

1. It is hard to see what professional advice led to her making it.

2. The statement was well drafted but she seemed unfamiliar with it, which indicates it was drafted at least in part by someone else.

Odd.

Conventionally thought curtain call photographs acceptable. But as at other times, they are not a controlled image.
Is Lesley Manville right that taking photos at a curtain call is insulting? @katemaltby.bsky.social and I argue the case while excellent @murielzagha.bsky.social Tahmima Anam & @tds153.bsky.social discuss films by Francois Ozon and Jim Jarmusch and Amitav Ghosh’s novel. www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/...
