Politics is about moral choices. If you chose to do evil then admit it. Don’t try and hide behind meaningless distinctions in degree.

Stare them in the eye, those who will suffer, lose their homes or even their lives and tell them why you chose to harm rather than help them.

This is really positive. With upfront cost the biggest barrier to households going electric, govt-backed, no- and low-interest loans will be really helpful for people who can borrow [1] www.gov.uk/government/n...

Bit surprised how little government made of the launch of the Warm Homes Loan Scheme today. Ultra low interest loans to help people cut energy bills by over £500 and improve their homes, which are also a key plank of Labour’s climate agenda. Bit bizarre not to give it the full fanfare.

Sometimes it just dawns on me how deeply weird and wild this situation is. A company making a crappy, unchecked and badly designed product, but thanks to pre-existing science fiction narratives they can aggressively tout their own failures and inadequacies as reasons for self-regulation

Funny thought experiment: Tech monopolies have spent about $1 trillion on AI development so far. How good of a chatbot could we have built for $1 trillion by just employing smart people to answer any question people might reasonably ask and collecting all the answers in a big lookup table?

You or someone you know probably believes misinformation about natural gas; polling shows HALF of likely voters think it’s a clean fuel.

We made this episode to try and debunk some of that misinformation, but also to explore the decades-long propaganda campaign fueling it.

Also worth reading the article for a clear explanation of what happened and what the problem is. I'm not an infrastructure expert but it feels like too much attention is being paid to the razzle dazzle, hyperscale end of things and not enough to the foundations

I talk a lot about major transport investment, but one of the biggest bangs for the buck policy-wise would be a full pavement parking ban and more rigid enforcement of traffic rules.

Enforcement is so lax that this stuff is just completely normalised now, and it's unacceptable.

To me, primary energy is important as *the core criticism* of fossil fuels. Most of the climate impacts we suffer today are from fossil fuel combustion **we never really 'used'** - what a testament to how absurd and terrible fossil fuels are

bsky.app/profile/keta...
Part of the reason this sort of baffles people is that we still don't widely understand just how intensely silly it is to get energy from old dead compressed plants

Made this a few years ago but it's the same today: ~2/3rds of climate impacts relate to energy that was never 'used'

Spoke to a retrofit assessor over the weekend who was laid off last month because of the cancellation of ECO and uncertainty in funding for energy efficiency.

10,000s of people in the same boat.

The danger is when funding does finally come, no one is there to do the work and skils are wasted.
It should be simple:

👉 Warm Homes Plan: projected £1bn annual bill savings, 50,000 jobs.

👉 Rosebank: around 1,100 jobs.

Insulate homes. Cut bills. Create jobs. Reduce fossil fuel dependence.

Why not invest in warmth, not more oil?

I thought, being a buildings more than a tech person really, that I didn't really understand all this.

But have recently realised that it's just another property bubble, so I get it now. Though that means it's possibly even more stupid than I originally assumed.
"Analysts at Bernstein this month estimated only about 35 per cent of the planned US data centre pipeline was credible"

And I am certain that number is much lower in the UK. The total processing capacity of the UK "pipeline" is ~15x the expected requirements of the big AI companies
"SB Energy, majority owned by Masayoshi Son’s SoftBank and backed by OpenAI and Nvidia, has not completed a single data centre, and has $174bn in capital needs in order to satisfy contracts worth $430bn in future revenue, largely from OpenAI."
