Where the treatment is reimbursed economic restraint is used by applying flexible, needs-based approaches. This is done in Scotland, France and Sweden.

This is no longer about how much it will cost, but how long people can wait before independence is gone.

The threshold for cost effectiveness is actually based on common conditions treated with drugs consumed by a majority. So these rare diseases are never going to pass.

We’ve also seen discrepancies in how some conditions are approved and others aren’t.

We aren’t talking about an optional extra here. This is a relentlessly progressive disease. Every day without treatment means further loss of independence, speech and mobility. Patients across Europe are already benefiting from access.

This isn’t a budget debate. It’s a person’s life.

Yes, it’s a small change but can make a difference in allowing carers to have their voice heard on polling day. I will continue to raise other issues like abolishing the means test and a right to respite for carers.
