This last day of #Invertefest: the silkworm moth, a controversial species. Breeding has left them defenseless and dependent on humans. If not intended for breeding, they are killed in the cocoon.

To avoid these issues, some silk growers harvest cocoons of wild moths after they emerge.

Unable to fly because they lack mouths, and unable to fly because their wings are so heavy heavy, they are defenseless and completely dependent on humans. This has created controversy, and some have turned to Ahimsa silk, harvested from cocoons after wild moths have emerged. Ahimsa is the idea of avoiding harm to any living being.

Despite their differences, these lovelies are both Treehoppers. They mimic different things bc of differences in their environs.

What interests us is the symbiosis between Hemikyptha and ants. The former secretes "honeydew;" ants feed on it and protect their food source.

Kit gave us an easy one today - so many monsters are far kinder than any human. A favorite is Ken Kaneki of Tokyo Ghoul.

Turned into a ghoul, Kaneki faces eating human flesh to survive, but refuses to take that which is not willingly given.

Today, Kit offers you the Largid for #Invertefest. This guy seems ready to poison you with his foul smell and flavor, but he's actually quite harmless. Bugs can be just like so many alleged monsters, not actually dangerous, just trying to survive.

Today's Doodl and #InverteFest crossover is a four spotted skimmer. I count this as a personal milestone because I was the first person to record this species in Seattle!

Yesterday Kit's #Invertefest Lopidea demanded an unusual sort of misunderstood monster, a parasite worthy of empathy.
Meet Sai. Unintentionally turned by a cruelly treated krasue, she must feed, and the one who loves her must aid or stop her. Scary and sweet, it's a must-see.

For day 3 of #Invertefest, Kit offers Lopidea major. Evolution led to an unusual, devilish defense: rather than being inherent toxic, it stores the toxins of the plants it consumes. Mountain laurel contains a very nasty poison, no doubt the choice of many a murderer.
